Chapter 171:
“Then I won’t go either. I’ll stay home with you.”
“No,” I said at once. “Isn’t it an important event?”
“It isn’t,” he answered evenly and did not continue.
After we got home, I shut myself inside the study and worked until late at night.

It was only around eleven that I rubbed my sore neck and went to the bedroom to wash up.
The moment I pushed open the bathroom door, I stopped short.
The room was thick with steam, and Ethan was inside.
He had clearly just finished showering, with only a white towel hanging loosely around his waist. He stood with his back to me, his body forming a flawless inverted triangle. Broad shoulders, a lean waist, every line of muscle drawn tight with strength.
Drops of water slid from his damp hair, trailing down the groove of his spine to the edge of the towel.
He was standing before the mirror, his jaw covered in white shaving cream, moving the razor smoothly across the stubble with practiced ease.
“Sorry, I didn’t know you were in here,” my face burned and my heart pounded as I blurted out an apology.
He met my eyes through the mirror, amusement flickering in his gaze, completely at ease.
I snatched up my things and fled in a fluster, hurrying into the bathroom at the far end of the hall. Even after I closed the door, the image from a moment ago kept replaying in my mind. We had been together for three years, and I thought I should have been used to it by now, yet the sight of his body, so bare, so dangerously attractive, still caught me off guard every time.
That was my Alpha. Even with our bond hanging by a thread, my instincts still clamored for surrender.
After the lights were turned off, the master bedroom was so still that the only sound left was our breathing.
I lay there with my back facing him when, all at once, a warm, powerful hand came over mine and threaded our fingers together.
My body stiffened, but I neither spoke nor pulled away.
My lower belly already had the slightest curve to it; the life inside had now reached three months.
As a she-wolf, I could have allowed a little casual intimacy at this stage, but a fierce resistance rose inside me instead.
My thoughts drifted back to the time at the Voss estate. After Ethan drank the tonic Rola had prepared, his body burned with heat, yet he would rather take two cold showers than touch me.
Back then, had it been because he believed doing that with me would be a betrayal of Ivy?
As that thought passed through my mind, I closed my eyes and slowed my breathing, pretending to be asleep.
Ethan braced himself on one arm and watched me in silence under the dim moonlight spilling through the window. Then, just as he was about to lie back down, I accidentally opened my eyes.
