Chapter 673:
What I couldn’t wrap my head around was Ethan’s reaction. All the way from Nshire, he’d heard I’d received flowers and, like a stubborn child nursing a grudge, was willing to gamble with his own health just to make a point.
“Has he lost his mind?” I burst out, unable to hide the exasperation in my voice. “They’re only flowers! Is that really worth canceling his infusion? Doesn’t he know his body can’t handle this kind of strain right now?”
“Ms. Riley, you know Alpha better than anyone,” Noah replied with a weary sigh that carried unmistakable concern. “Just so he could return a day early to see you and the kids, he’s been working himself to the bone. For days, he’s been squeezing every minute out of his schedule, surviving on almost no sleep. He’s thrown himself into work because it’s the only way to stop himself from overthinking. But the instant he learned you’d accepted another man’s flowers, everything he’d been holding together fell apart. He’s shut himself inside the study now, and no one’s been able to reach him.”
My grip on the phone tightened until my knuckles turned pale.
The fragile wall of reason I’d been clinging to began to crack, crumbling away piece by piece.
“I understand.” I drew a slow, steadying breath, forcing my racing heartbeat to settle. “I’ll text him. I’ll make him answer his phone and cooperate with the doctors.”
After ending the call, I lowered my gaze to the extravagant bouquet of roses resting at my feet.

Only moments ago, the crimson blooms had looked breathtaking. Now their brilliant color felt almost blinding, as though they were mocking me.
I opened my chat with Ethan and typed with trembling fingers. “Noah told me you’re refusing treatment. Ethan, don’t punish yourself over something like this. Please, go get your infusion, okay?”
The message was delivered, but no reply came.
As I stood there, still wondering who could have sent the flowers, my phone suddenly rang again, shattering the silence.
Certain it was Ethan calling back, I answered without even checking the caller ID. “Ethan, can you stop being so stubborn? Your health should come first—”
“Lianne, it’s me.” Instead of Ethan’s cool, familiar voice, Frank’s gentle tone drifted through the receiver.
I went still, embarrassment washing over me. “Frank… I’m sorry. I thought it was…”
“You thought it was Ethan?” Frank let out a quiet laugh, though the sadness behind it was impossible to miss. “Looks like the roses I sent ended up causing you quite a bit of trouble.”
My eyes widened. “The flowers… they were from you?”
“Yesterday I saw a photo on your company’s forum,” he said softly. “You looked beautiful holding that bouquet. I figured that since you liked flowers, I’d send you some as well.”
After a brief pause, he added in a low voice, “Lianne… from now on, don’t accept flowers from anyone else, all right?”
Only then did everything click into place. The modest bouquet Zoe had given me as an apology the day before had somehow snowballed into two entirely different disasters.
