Chapter 208:
I shook my head, and my tears spilled over. “Ever since Ivy came back, I’ve finally understood what it means to humiliate myself. I’ve finally understood where I stand. What I want is a love that is complete. The kind of love where he would remain beside me even if the whole world stood against us. But Ethan can’t give me that. His heart made its choice long ago, and it was never me.”
Rola looked at me, her eyes full of sorrow and helplessness.
She apologized for Ethan, saying their family owed me far too much.
“He doesn’t owe me anything. I was the one who never belonged there.” I wiped away my tears and forced a bitter little smile. “I’ve ruined your birthday banquet. I’m truly sorry. But if I don’t speak the truth now, this false peace will only wound you and Harold even more.”

“My foolish girl.” Rola drew me into her embrace, her voice thick with emotion. “Even if one day you are no longer my granddaughter-in-law, you will still be my family. I will always care for you, and I will always stand by you. But, can you truly bear to leave us behind?”
That single question shattered the last of my restraint.
In this world, apart from my parents who were long gone, only Rola and Harold had ever given me something that felt like a real home.
I held onto Rola and cried like a child who had lost her way, for this rare tenderness, and for the three years I had thrown away.
When I finally managed to stop crying, I thanked Rola.
She stroked my back and said with unwavering firmness, “Don’t worry. Even if this bond is severed, I will never allow that woman to form a bond with Ethan. I will protect…”
Before she could finish, a heavy crash rang out behind us, followed by the sharp sound of a cane striking the floor.
I spun around in horror and saw Harold standing in the doorway.
His usually composed face was red with fury, and his chest rose and fell in violent, uneven breaths.
“What are you saying?” His voice came out rough, shaking with the wrath of an Alpha. “Lianne wants to break the bond with Ethan?”
I went rigid where I stood, my mind emptying in an instant.
The one thing I had dreaded most had finally come to pass.
“Harold, please let me explain…” I scrambled to my feet and rushed toward him.
At that moment, Ethan stormed in, clearly drawn by the noise.
The instant he took in what was happening, the color drained from his face, but he forced himself to speak. “Grandpa, calm down. I was the one who suggested breaking the bond. Between us…”
“Ethan!” Harold bellowed, his hand shaking violently as he pointed at Ethan. “You ungrateful brat! Have you forgotten who…”
Before he could finish, the color drained from his face. The cane slipped from his hand. He clutched at his chest in pain and fell backward.
“Grandpa!”
“Harold!”
Ethan moved first. He lunged forward and caught Harold before he hit the floor.
“Get the car! Right now!” Ethan shouted like a man losing his mind, his voice filled with a terror I had never heard before.
I stood there frozen, staring at Harold’s shut eyes and bloodless lips, while a crushing tide of guilt swallowed me whole.
