Chapter 953:
The familiar click of high heels approached across the floor. Melisa stopped before my desk and spoke with unmistakable pride, clearly expecting praise. “Ethan, I’ve already given Lianne the antidote. You don’t need to worry about her anymore.”
“Good,” I answered without lifting my eyes from the document.
Silence followed. When she realized that was all the reaction she was getting, she shifted uneasily. After a moment, she came closer and softened her voice. “Ethan, there’s something I want to discuss with you. About the two of us.”
Only then did I raise my head. I leaned back in my chair and regarded her calmly. “I’m listening.”
She inhaled deeply, gathering her courage before speaking. “I know I’ve made mistakes before. I know I’ve done things that hurt you. But let’s put that behind us now. I hope you will accept me as your girlfriend. I’m being sincere.”
I listened without interrupting. I knew exactly why she had suddenly become so remorseful.

She wasn’t truly regretting what she’d done to Lianne. What bothered her was losing my trust.
Now that she sensed me pulling away, she was desperate to restore her image. She wanted to appear harmless, repentant, and worthy of another chance.
I gave her nothing in response.
Taking my silence as an opening, she hurriedly continued, “If you marry me, I promise I’ll never plot against you again. I’ll treat you well. I’ll take care of Ruby and Silas. I’ll be a good wife and a good stepmother. Ethan, I’m serious about this.”
I closed the document and looked directly at her. “Promises are easy to make.”
She stiffened, clearly caught off guard. “Then tell me what you want,” she said quickly. “Whatever it is, I’ll do it.”
I studied her for several seconds before deliberately leaving a crack in the door she desperately wanted opened. “It’s not entirely impossible. I just haven’t decided what my conditions would be.”
Hope immediately flickered across her face. “So, you’re not completely opposed to the idea of marrying me?”
I watched her carefully, then allowed the faintest smile to touch my lips. I neither confirmed nor denied it. That uncertainty was far more useful than a straightforward answer.
As expected, she immediately took it as encouragement.
The tension drained from her features, replaced by barely restrained excitement. She believed she’d finally made progress. In her mind, Lianne no longer had a place in my heart, and that she could fill it.
She moved closer, her voice soft and almost affectionate. “Ethan, if we become husband and wife, I’ll put you first in everything. I won’t be like Lianne. I won’t constantly upset you, cause you trouble, or force you into impossible situations. I’ll treasure you and make sure you never regret choosing me.”
I gave a faint, unreadable smile. I didn’t answer.
She could never understand what I truly wanted.
From the very beginning, there had only ever been one woman in my heart. Lianne.
