Chapter 191

Chapter 191:
A quiet, bitter sense of irony surfaced within me. Even outsiders could see the truth so plainly. I was the only one still clinging to the illusion of a fated bond, playing the fool.
I had just begun typing, “No need,” when a shadow loomed over me out of nowhere.
Ethan had come up behind me without a sound. His gaze was pinned to my screen, his voice tinged with a faint, taunting amusement. “‘Ethan isn’t someone you can build a future with’? Really? Then who is? Frank?”
His voice came so suddenly that it made me flinch. My hand jolted, and I almost let my phone slip.
I shot him an annoyed look and stayed silent, then continued typing my response to Frank. “I’ll explain everything later when I get the chance.”
“Feeling nervous?” Ethan continued, circling to my side before taking a seat. He stretched out, crossing his long legs, his stare cold enough to unsettle. “Who does he think he is, passing judgment on me? Lianne, we’re not even over yet, and you’re already eager to line up your next mate, letting him insult me?”

The way he spoke carried the sharp edge of a husband accusing his wife of betrayal.
I placed my utensils down and met his gaze with steady calm. “Those weren’t my words, so don’t pin them on me. Frank is just worried about me as a friend.”
“Worried?” Ethan let out a derisive laugh, leaning closer with a suffocating intensity. “You didn’t deny it. So you believe it too? That I’m not someone you can entrust your future to?”
I drew in a slow breath and looked straight into his eyes, my voice measured and unwavering, “Since you want an answer, I’ll give you one. If it weren’t for Harold’s condition, we would’ve already severed our mate bond.”
Ethan said nothing, only staring at me.
His hand tightened around my waist, as though he meant to pull me into himself and never let go.
I drew in a slow breath, steadying myself as I forced calm over the storm inside me, then met his eyes, which burned with a dangerous intensity.
“I understand what’s bothering you, Ethan. But I’m not like you. I won’t move on to someone else before we’ve properly ended what we have. Frank doesn’t factor into this. If the day comes when we’re truly finished, it will be because I’ve lost every ounce of faith in you, not because of anyone else.”
With that, I shoved him aside and stepped out of the house ahead of him.
We exchanged no further words along the way, the silence stretched so tight it felt heavier than any argument we could have had.
When we reached the company lobby, the elevator doors slid open, and I followed him out without a sound. But instead of trailing him to his office like usual, I turned away and made for the restroom at the far end of the corridor.
At a moment like this, the last thing I wanted was for us to be seen together by the staff.
