Chapter 294:
Faced with that soft, pleading look, I simply couldn’t refuse her.
“Come on.” I straightened and held out my hand, my voice gentler than ever. “I’ll take you back. And I’ll ask your mommy if she allows you to eat candy, then I can take you to buy it.”
The second she heard that I wanted to see her mother, the little girl shook her head like mad, panic flashing in her eyes. “No! I don’t want Mommy to know! She’ll get angry, and she might smack me!”
I let out a resigned sigh at the sight of her panicked face.
“Alright, I won’t tell her.” I gave in and pointed toward the nearby convenience store. “Wait here, and I’ll go buy it for you, okay?”
She tipped her head to the side and thought it over for a long while, her big eyes sweeping across my face as though she were judging whether I could be trusted.
At last, as if she had made an enormous decision, she pulled out the crumpled bill and solemnly placed it in my hand.

“You are very handsome, and you look like someone I can trust. You wouldn’t deceive me, would you?” she asked in a timid voice, as though handing the money over truly hurt her.
I froze for a second.
I was the Alpha of the Thorn Pack, the CEO of the multibillion-dollar Voss Group, but I was being suspected by a little girl of swindling her money.
A laugh slipped from me as I took the note still warm from her hand and answered in all seriousness, “Don’t worry. I’m very rich. I’m not going to take your money.”
I headed toward the store with the bill in my hand, my heart softening in a way I couldn’t explain.
For some reason, the little girl stirred something in me. That faint, pulsing tug in my blood brought a wildly absurd and indulgent thought to mind.
What if… she was my daughter?
If Lianne had not walked away three years ago, if our child had been born safely, then they would probably be around her age now, wouldn’t they?
I bought almost every kind of delicate, lightly flavored candy in the store. The cashier looked at me the way one might look at a father hopelessly spoiling his child.
With a large bag of candy in hand, I made my way back, already imagining the little girl’s delight when she saw what I had brought.
But when I returned to the hotel entrance, that small figure in blue was nowhere in sight.
Only the evening wind curled across the empty steps.
My heart dropped. Afraid that something bad might have happened to her, I quickly went to the front desk to ask.
“Oh, you mean the little girl in the blue dress?” The receptionist remembered at once and answered with a polite smile. “Her mommy came by a little while ago and brought her back to their room. Please don’t worry.”
