Chapter 136:
I had already made it clear that a man like Frank was no match for her, yet she had obviously let my words go in one ear and out the other. Was she really intending to throw herself into his arms the second our bond was broken?
“Ethan? Ethan?”
Ivy’s voice sounded in my ears. I snapped back to myself and saw her clutching my arm tightly, with half her body pressed against mine.
“Look, Lianne and Frank really do look perfect together,” Ivy murmured. “If you break the mate bond, wouldn’t it be a good ending for Lianne to end up with Frank?”
“They don’t belong together.” The words left my mouth before I had time to think, and the rigidity in my voice caught even me off guard.
“Why not?” Ivy asked, studying me with her beautiful eyes. “Could it be, you can’t stand the thought of seeing her with another man?”

“No.” I denied it on instinct, even though my heart lurched at that very moment. Putting on a detached expression, I said, “I know what they’re like, and I know what they do. They’re not the same kind of people. Lianne needs someone steadier, not an actor who lives under the spotlight.”
Reason told me that if I had already chosen to marry Ivy, then I shouldn’t still be affected by everything Lianne did.
And yet this meal felt like torture from beginning to end.
Frank’s attentiveness toward Lianne was so careful it bordered on intimacy. He neatly sliced the beef for her and set it on her plate, kept asking whether it suited her taste, and when she lowered her head to sip her soup, he even reached over to brush a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
Those intimate moments wrapped around my heart like thorn-covered vines and squeezed tighter and tighter.
As I watched them, the wineglass in my hand was nearly crushed.
When Ivy asked me to serve her some food, I did it mechanically, but my eyes seemed to have a will of their own, returning to Lianne again and again.
Not long after, she got to her feet and said she was going to the restroom.
A few seconds later, I rose as well, almost without thinking.
“I’m going out for a smoke.” Using that as an excuse, I brushed off Ivy’s confused look and headed straight out of the private room.
The area by the sink outside the restroom was dimly lit, the shadows blurring everything.
Lianne was standing at the mirror fixing her makeup, her head tipped back slightly and her swanlike neck laid bare.
I crossed the distance in a few quick steps, and before she could cry out, I planted both hands on the counter beside her, pinning her in the narrow space between me and the sink.
“What are you doing?” she cried, startled.
In the mirror, she looked at me with alarm, her dark eyes guarded and wary.
“There’s something I need to tell you.” My voice came out hoarse as I stared at her.
“I don’t want to talk to you. Let me go, I’m leaving.” She turned, trying to get away.
