Chapter 483:
“Melisa.” I reached out and caught her sleeve, desperation flickering in my eyes. “Can you do me a favor? If he asks about my injury, please tell him it’s getting better. He’s already in such a fragile state, and I don’t want him worrying about me any more than he has to.”
For a second, Melisa stared at me, then chuckled slightly. Her bright eyes shone with amusement. “You two are something else. Earlier, while I was checking on the Alpha, he specifically warned me not to tell you about the inflammation in his wounds. He was worried you’d hide somewhere and cry over it. What is this? Both of you keeping secrets to protect each other?”
The moment her words registered, my heart clenched. Panic set in, and my breathing quickened. “His wounds are inflamed? Is it serious? Did it happen because of what happened earlier…”
“Relax.” Melisa quickly rested a hand on my shoulder, trying to calm me. “He’s fine now. For an Alpha, that inflammation is nothing serious. But you…”

Her gaze dropped to my left leg, and her expression darkened immediately.
She grabbed the wheelchair and pushed me toward the examination room. “Your wound is already showing signs of infection. You flew halfway across the world right after surgery and kept pushing yourself beyond your limits. Did you think your body was indestructible? If this isn’t treated immediately, you could genuinely lose your leg.”
Inside the examination room, the lights cast a harsh, cold glow.
Melisa quickly removed the layers of bandages wrapped around my leg.
The swollen wound was revealed. It was red and already showing signs of decay. Even she, someone used to injury and death, couldn’t help but gasp.
“Does it hurt?” she asked softly as she cleaned the wound with antiseptic.
I bit my lip hard. Cold sweat slid down my temples, but I simply shook my head. “I’m fine. I’ve gotten used to it.”
Melisa paused briefly, then moved even more gently.
Perhaps sensing my discomfort, she began chatting casually to distract me.
“To be honest, I envy you.” She smiled bitterly. There was a calm resignation in her eyes, like someone who had long stopped expecting much from life. “I spend every day surrounded by patients and research labs. On top of that, witch blood runs through my veins, and people are always cautious around someone like me. In the werewolf world, we’re treated like outsiders. The moment people learn what I am, they instinctively keep their distance. I’m almost thirty now, and I’ve never even experienced a relationship.”
I looked at her, feeling a strange sense of sympathy.
“After working in hospitals for so many years and witnessing situations where people’s lives hang by a thread, I’ve seen mates abandon each other when things got difficult. I’ve watched people betray their loved ones for power and wealth, even remove oxygen masks without hesitation.” Melisa sighed heavily. “That’s why I’ve always believed genuine love doesn’t exist. Not the kind where you trust someone enough to place your life in their hands.”
“I used to believe the same thing.” I endured the burning agony radiating through my leg, speaking softly but firmly. “That was before I met him.”
