Chapter 85:
He turned toward me, his voice unsteady. “My grandfather collapsed.”
Lianne’s POV
The hospital hallway blazed with harsh, unforgiving light.
Ethan’s hand locked hard around my wrist. He moved so fast that I could barely keep up, almost stumbling as he pulled me down the corridor.
Outside the operating room, Rola sat by herself on a bench, her elegant bearing gone, leaving her looking worn and fragile.
“Grandma!” Ethan came to an abrupt halt. “How is Grandpa? How long has he been in there?”
Rola raised her head, her voice rough with strain. “He’s been inside for an hour. Ethan, the two of you should sit and wait.”

I pushed through the dizziness and lowered myself beside Rola, wrapping my hand around hers and murmuring comfort to her. “Try not to worry so much. Harold has always been strong. He’ll be alright.”
Rola managed a slight smile and turned to look at me more closely. Her brows drew together as she lifted the hair from my forehead. “Lianne, why is your face this pale? And what happened to your forehead?”
My heart lurched, and I reflexively tried to pull back, but her grip on my shoulder held me in place.
“It’s nothing.” I made myself smile, though my eyes were already starting to glisten. “I was hurrying downstairs and accidentally hit the doorframe. It really doesn’t hurt.”
I couldn’t bring myself to meet Rola’s eyes, and I couldn’t bear to imagine what I would do if anything happened to Harold.
Aside from her, Harold was the only person who had ever truly welcomed me and stood up for me.
Only a few days earlier, he had been holding my hand and talking about wanting to see Ethan and me have children. How had everything changed so completely in just an instant?
The clock dragged on through the suffocating quiet.
We spent another three agonizing hours outside the operating room.
Rola gave my hand a gentle pat and said, “Ethan, take Lianne back home. She hurt her head, and she doesn’t look well. I’ll remain here, and I’ll call you the moment Harold comes out.”
“I’m not going.” The words slipped out before I could hold them back. I gripped Rola’s arm firmly. “I want to stay here with you. I want to see Harold the moment he comes out.”
Ethan remained at my side. “I’m staying as well.”
Seeing that neither of us would yield, Rola let out a sigh and gave up trying to talk us into leaving.
Another two hours passed at a crawl.
Just when I felt I was about to collapse, the glaring red light above the doors to the operating room finally went out, turning into a calm green.
The doors opened wide, and the doctor stepped out, taking off his mask.
Ethan hurried over. “How is my grandfather?”
