Chapter 223:
“Die!” His hand flew up without warning, and a spray of fine powder came straight for my face.
My eyes narrowed. I twisted aside on instinct, and though the rain scattered most of the powder, some of it still entered my lungs.
I began to cough.
A fierce, burning pain ripped through my chest, making each breath feel impossible.
It was silver powder. To werewolves, there was no fouler or more lethal weapon. It could numb the nervous system in an instant and force the wolf back down before it could rise.
“Move! Kill him!”
The remaining five threw their umbrellas aside in the same instant. In the downpour, their bodies contorted and swelled, bones snapping as they shifted. A heartbeat later, five enormous gray wolves stood in front of me, their green eyes locked on me with naked murderous intent.
I tried to force a shift, but no matter how hard I pushed, the wolf inside me would not answer.

“Damn it…” I swore under my breath. While dodging the first strike, I still took a slash across my arm.
The suit had only been ripped open, but the silver had already worked its way into my blood, and my sight began to swim.
But I was still the Alpha of the Thorn Pack. Even trapped in human form, the instincts carved into me by battle had not disappeared.
I flung the umbrella away and let the rain drench me to the bone.
When another wolf sprang at me, I seized its foreleg with exact timing, turned its force against it, slammed my shoulder into its chest, and hurled it over, driving it hard into the soaked pavement.
Water burst upward, and the wolf cried out in pain.
I dragged the rain from my face with one hand and fixed the others with a cold stare. “Who sent you?”
“Who sent us?” The tall one stared at me, his eyes glowing red. “You expanded the Thorn Pack’s territory and stole our land, leaving us with nowhere to go. Tonight, we’ll repay the dead with your blood!”
With that, all five rushed me again.
I met them head-on, smashing my fist into one wolf’s muzzle and whipping my elbow across to knock aside the jaws snapping for my throat.
But the silver poisoning was already dragging my body down.
Blood slid from my fingertips into the rain and vanished almost at once.
My strength was fading far too fast, and several deep gashes had already been torn open across my back and legs.
While I was locked on the two wolves in front of me, a sudden warning flared from behind.
I spun around. The leader had already circled behind me, a silver knife gripped in his hand, driving straight toward my back.
For one suspended instant, time seemed to freeze.
“Ethan! Look out!”
A shrill, familiar scream tore through the rain and struck my ears like a blow.
It was Ivy.
