Chapter 491:
“This is all your fault!” I shot him a glare. Ignoring the soreness throughout my body, I forced myself out of bed, my legs trembling beneath me.
I quickly straightened my wrinkled clothes and hurried to the window. I opened it to let in the cool morning air, hoping it would carry away the lingering scent that still hung in the room.
After taking several deep breaths to steady myself, I opened the door and found Melisa waiting outside with a tray of medical supplies in her hands.
Her keen eyes settled on me for a brief moment before shifting past my shoulder toward Ethan.
A spark of curiosity flickered across her face, as though she had figured something out. Without commenting, she walked into the room.
“Ms. Riley, you don’t look very well. Did you have trouble sleeping last night?” Melisa asked casually while putting on a pair of sterile gloves.
Those observant eyes of hers seemed to see straight through me.

My heart skipped a beat. Avoiding her gaze, I nervously fidgeted with the edge of my shirt. “No… not really. Taking care of a patient is tiring. I just didn’t sleep very deeply.”
“Really?” Melisa walked toward the window, sniffed the air, and continued with a frown, “This room feels strange. Even with the window open, the air still seems heavy. There’s a sweet scent lingering here…”
I lowered my head so quickly I nearly buried my face in my chest.
The memories from the previous night immediately filled my mind. I could still remember the warmth of Ethan’s fingers on the back of my neck.
Keeping my eyes fixed on the intricate patterns covering the floor, I silently begged that Melisa wouldn’t say anything more embarrassing.
Fortunately, she dropped the subject. She walked over to the bed and carefully began removing the bandages wrapped around Ethan’s chest.
As the layers of gauze came off, I noticed that the wound, which had already begun forming a scab, was bleeding again.
“Alpha!” Melisa’s voice sharpened instantly, carrying clear disapproval. “I specifically told you this was a penetrating injury. You were lucky to survive it, and avoiding strenuous activity is absolutely necessary. What did you do last night to make it reopen?”
Standing nearby, I froze completely. Heat rushed to my face, and I felt like a child who had just been caught doing something wrong.
Ethan, on the other hand, appeared completely unfazed. Reclining comfortably against the pillows, he looked nothing like someone recovering from a life-threatening injury. In fact, he seemed unusually energized, as if the night before had somehow replenished him.
Then he deliberately glanced in my direction, amusement dancing in his eyes.
“Probably slept in a bad position,” he answered casually. Then he added, “Melisa, when can I finally take a bath? I feel sticky all over. It’s getting uncomfortable.”
As he spoke, his eyes stayed fixed on me, making the meaning behind his words very clear.
Even Melisa, usually so composed, stood speechless for a moment.
