Chapter 651:
I forced myself to push the idea aside.
I was reading far too much into it. Maybe the company had just decided to introduce a new benefit.
The morning meeting proceeded without any issues. Most of the discussion centered on the field due diligence scheduled for that afternoon.
Alex chose two capable members of the team for the assignment. Throughout the meeting, he purposely ignored Zoe, clearly trying to sideline her.
After the meeting ended, I returned to my office and began organizing the documents we would need for the afternoon’s due diligence.
While I was in the break room making myself a cup of coffee, raised voices drifted over from the stairwell nearby.
“Why wasn’t I chosen? I’m part of this team too!” Zoe’s voice was filled with anger and wounded pride.

“Because of the ridiculous things you said in the director’s office yesterday.” Alex’s reply was cold. “Zoe, this is your last warning. Stay at your desk and do your job. Stop picking fights with Lianne. If you don’t heed my warning again, you won’t have to wait for her to take action — I’ll personally ask HR to fire you. You know exactly how Ethan handles these things. If you target someone he’s protecting, nobody will be able to help you.”
My fingers instinctively tightened around the coffee cup. Without making a sound, I turned around and walked back to my office with a heavy heart.
Once I sat down, my hands rested over the keyboard without moving. My eyes stayed fixed on the inactive meeting channel icon on my computer for a long time.
I knew I shouldn’t. Even so, I couldn’t stop myself from wanting to click it.
At that moment, my phone vibrated. It was Frank calling.
Lianne’s POV:
Frank’s voice came through the line the moment I answered. “Lianne, I heard you’ve gone back to Voss Group. Is that true?”
“Yeah. I’m just taking care of the transition for now,” I replied.
A brief silence settled between us before Frank said, “Then let me pick you up after work. We can have dinner together.”
I immediately refused. “Frank, things have been really hectic lately. I still have a due diligence meeting this afternoon, and I may need to stop by the law firm afterward—”
“Lianne,” Frank cut in, sounding hopeful. “It’s my birthday today.”
After the call ended, I sat in my office chair, staring into the distance, drifting into deep thought.
It was Frank’s birthday. Because of that, I found it hard to turn him down.
Through all these years, he had always stood quietly by my side, supporting me no matter what happened.
I let out a soft sigh, then opened my browser and ordered a rich Black Forest cake from the highest-rated dessert shop nearby.
Still, the idea of being alone with Frank made me uneasy.
My emotions were already in complete disarray, and I had no strength left to deal with him.
Without wasting another second, I texted Tracy. “It’s Frank’s birthday today. Are you coming?”
