Chapter 81:
I didn’t expect that answer, and it caught me off guard. A faint warmth stirred in my chest.
“Spaghetti,” I said without thinking.
“Alright, I’ll go buy what I need. There’s a caregiver here, and my phone is on the table. Use it if anything comes up.”
“What about mine?” I asked as it crossed my mind.
“I didn’t bring it with me. Just use mine for now.”
Before leaving, he leaned in and pressed a brief kiss to my forehead.
Once the door closed, the room fell quiet again.
His footsteps faded down the hall, and for a moment, a small sense of hope crept in. The next second, I dug my nails into my palm and forced it away.
I couldn’t let myself waver. This was nothing more than guilt on his part. By tomorrow, everything between us would be over.
The phone on the table suddenly rang, again and again.

I reached out and answered it. Before I could speak, Ivy’s voice came through, soft and pitiful. “Ethan, where are you? Why aren’t you answering me through the mind link? My head hurts so much. Can you come back and stay with me?”
The moment I heard her, everything I had kept buried rose to the surface.
I tightened my grip on the phone and spoke slowly, making each word clear. “Ivy, I’m sorry. Ethan isn’t available right now. He went out to buy ingredients. He said he’s cooking for me.”
The other end fell completely silent.
I held the phone, listening to my own heartbeat, and for the first time, I felt a trace of satisfaction.
Lianne’s POV
“Lianne, don’t start thinking you’ve won just because Ethan made you a meal.” Ivy’s voice came through with a frosty sneer. “He only feels sorry for you. Don’t forget, you already signed the rejection. It won’t be long before you’re thrown out of Ethan’s house.”
Hearing the smugness in her voice, I only grew calmer.
“Ivy, did you call in such a panic because you’re jealous out of your mind?” I answered in an even tone, resting back against the pillows. “Or are you that lacking in confidence that you’re scared Ethan won’t really leave me?”
“You…” She choked on the word.
“One more thing,” I said before she could break into another shrill outburst, the corner of my mouth lifting in a cold smile. “Ethan keeps his phone on automatic recording so he won’t miss anything important. Every word you just said was recorded clearly. Tell me, what do you think he’ll think after he hears it?”
The other end of the call went completely silent.
Ivy obviously hadn’t seen that coming. When she spoke again, her voice was full of disbelief. “You bitch…”
She sucked in a breath, clearly about to keep hurling abuse at me, but the thought of Ethan hearing the recording seemed to frighten her enough to stop. Then she ended the call.
Listening to the dead line, I couldn’t help letting out a quiet laugh.
