Chapter 669:
“They’ve all been wonderful. The team’s incredibly capable. I’m still trying to catch up because I don’t want to become everyone’s weak link,” I replied.
“I’ll have Noah include your name among the project’s lead contributors,” Ethan declared.
My pruning shears stopped halfway through another stem, and I replied politely, “There’s really no need. I’ll be gone in half a year. After that, someone else will take over the project’s long-term management. Putting my name on it now wouldn’t be fair to whoever finishes the job. I don’t want recognition for work I won’t see through.”
“You can complete it before you leave.” His voice grew quieter.
I lowered my eyes. “I won’t. We both know that eventually we’ll be facing each other before the Pack Council. Before that day comes, I’d rather keep everything between us uncomplicated.”
The instant those words left my mouth, regret hit me.

Across the screen, Ethan went utterly still.
Countless emotions flickered through his eyes before every trace of them vanished into silence.
“If that’s what you want, then so be it.”
The words were icy. Without another sentence, he disconnected.
I stared at the blank screen long after the call had ended, feeling an unexpected hollowness spread through my chest.
After placing the completed arrangement on the console table by the entrance, I decided I would buy some pastries and snacks tomorrow to thank Zoe properly.
When I returned to my computer, the system showed that Ethan had joined an executive meeting almost immediately after ending our call.
I was about to continue reviewing my documents when another notification arrived.
It was a message from Noah. “Lianne, what flowers do you like?”
Confused, I replied, “Why are you asking me that all of a sudden?”
His answer came almost instantly. “Alpha just instructed us to send flowers to every woman in the company. Officially, it’s an employee appreciation gift, but I’ve worked beside him for years. I know exactly what he’s doing. He wants to send flowers to you, but he knows you’d reject them. So he turned it into a company-wide event so you couldn’t refuse.”
As I read the message, everything clicked into place.
Ethan had seen me arranging flowers during our call and assumed they’d come from a man.
Now he was flooding the entire company with flowers just to make me toss out the old ones.
Possessive, stubborn, and ridiculously jealous. That was Ethan in every sense. Even with an ocean separating us, he still found a way to surround me.
I sent Noah another message, asking when Ethan’s meeting would finish.
Apparently eager to complain, Noah answered immediately, “He’s completely insane. He’s squeezing three days of overseas meetings and site inspections into just two. I’ve never seen him work like this. Lianne, did something happen between you two? He’s been running nonstop like a machine.”
I looked at the message, unable to sort through the emotions rising inside me.
Was he exhausting himself because he wanted to come back sooner? Or was work simply the only thing keeping his mind occupied?
