Chapter 666:
“That’s right, Lianne!” Tracy hugged my arm, her eyes shining with excitement. “Come with us! I’ve always wanted to see the place where you used to live. If you’re there, I know it’ll be so much more fun.”
I dropped my eyes, avoiding their hopeful gazes. “I…” I hesitated before speaking softly. “Work has been really busy lately. I don’t know if I can travel now. Besides, I heard it’s been raining a lot in Brinewick lately…”
“Work will always be there,” Jeremy cut in with a playful smile. “Lianne, you refused way too quickly. Don’t tell me you still haven’t gotten over Ethan, so you’re deliberately avoiding the trip.”
My heart lurched. It felt as though he was seeing straight through my every thought.

“No,” I answered at once, though my voice trembled with unease.
“Then what are you worried about?” Jeremy’s expression softened as he added sincerely, “Even if you and Ethan have gone your separate ways, you’re still Ruby and Silas’s parents. The kids miss you both so much. Getting to travel with both Mom and Dad would give them memories they’ll treasure forever. No amount of money could replace that. Can you really bring yourself to let them down?”
My lips parted, but no words came out.
A family trip. Eating together, staying under the same roof, traveling side by side. The familiar routines we had once shared so naturally would now become nothing but silent torture.
I could already picture the scene. In Brinewick’s damp evening air, Ethan might look at me with those restrained, affectionate eyes — how could I possibly face him?
“Please, Lianne.” Tracy gently shook my arm. “Just come with us, okay?”
Faced with Tracy’s hopeful eyes and Jeremy’s heartfelt reminder about the children, I found myself unable to come up with a reason to refuse.
Jeremy smirked. “Stop overthinking it. Otherwise, we’ll really believe you’re still in love with Ethan.”
His words struck a sensitive spot in me.
The color drained from my face. I lowered my eyes, hiding the panic and embarrassment flickering in them.
“Jeremy, that’s enough,” Tracy said quickly when she noticed my discomfort. She kicked him lightly under the table, then wrapped her arm around mine and cheerfully added more food to my plate. “Don’t mind him. He talks without thinking half the time. And about the trip, we’re not forcing you. If you want to go, we’ll go. If you don’t, that’s perfectly fine.”
Thanks to Tracy’s playful banter, the meal ended on a much lighter note than expected.
After the meal, Jeremy drove me back to the office.
Just before I stepped out of the car, he rolled down the window and looked at me with his usual mischievous smile. “Lianne, seriously think about the trip, okay? Ethan’s actually been waiting for your answer.”
“I’ll think about it and tell Tracy later,” I said vaguely. Then I turned and hurried into the building, as though running away from something.
The moment I entered my office, a soft floral scent drifted toward me.
I stopped in my tracks.
A bouquet of fresh, brightly colored flowers sat in the middle of my desk.
