Chapter 267:
He wrapped me up tightly and buried his face against my neck. His burning breath brushed over my skin as he begged in a desperate voice, “What do I have to do… to make you stay? As long as we don’t break the bond, I’ll give you anything…”
As I felt his heart hammering wildly in his chest, the whole thing struck me as unbearably ironic.
“You want me to stay?” I breathed into his ear, my voice soft as air, yet cold enough to chill. “Fine. Ethan, unless you can bring that child back to life. If the baby stands in front of me and calls me Mom, then I’ll stay.”
For Ethan, that was a miracle that could never happen.
Just as I expected, his whole body went rigid at my words, and the strength in his grip slowly ebbed away.
He said nothing else, only kept holding me, until at last, as though every last bit of strength had left him, he sank back into a heavy sleep.
That frantic, desperate confession really had been nothing more than a pathetic dream.
I shoved him away hard, got to my feet, and straightened my rumpled clothes.
Before I walked out, I cast one final glance at the man who had once filled my entire youth. My eyes held nothing at all, not a trace of feeling.
“When you wake up sober, we’ll end this bond. Ethan, there’s no point dragging this out any longer.”

The snow came down without mercy, with no sign of letting up. Halfway up the mountain stood the Moon Goddess Altar, its ancient stone stairs buried under snow and steeped in a solemn, barren cold.
I waited in silence beneath the altar’s shadow.
Before long, a tall figure moved slowly through the falling snow.
It was Ethan.
He had changed into a formal black suit, which only made his pale, worn face look even starker.
Our eyes collided across the distance, and for an instant, even the air seemed to lock in place. His eyes churned with fierce unwillingness and pain, like a beast driven into a dead end.
I looked away at once, a faint ache brushing my chest before a deeper indifference drowned it out.
I could feel that the bond that had once tied us together and marked us as fated mates had already rotted away beneath the torment of these past days.
My determination to leave was as hard and unforgiving as the ice blanketing these mountains.
“Let’s go.” I spoke first, my voice calm and utterly flat.
He gave a low reply and fell into step behind me.
As Alpha, his presence was still crushingly powerful, yet he kept it tightly restrained, and in the endless snow, his footsteps sounded especially heavy.
This was the second time we had come to the Moon Goddess Altar.
The first time, we had stood here and sworn our devotion to each other, receiving the Moon Goddess’s blessing.
Now, however, we stepped into the frigid stone hall one after the other, each carrying the crest of our own pack, ready to cut the mate bond between us.
The hall was deathly quiet, and only the sound of our mingled breathing echoed against the stone walls.
