Chapter 156

Chapter 156:
My whole body went rigid, as though I had been frozen in place.
The song that marked the beginning of their relationship.
So this was the bond between them that no one could break, and I was nothing more than a foolish, laughable outsider who knew nothing.
My eyes drifted unintentionally to Ivy’s clasped hands, and the brilliant gleam there stabbed into me at once.
A huge diamond ring sat on her middle finger. Even from that distance, I knew with certainty that it was the very same ring I had seen in Ethan’s car. Back then, I had stupidly believed it was a surprise meant for me, but now it felt like a brutal slap of reality.
The piece came to an end, and the last note hung in the air before slowly fading.
To the sound of applause, Ethan got to his feet and made his way toward Ivy. As if it were the most natural thing in the world, he took her hand, slid his other arm around her narrow waist, and guided her to the middle of the hall, where they began dancing as the waltz started up again.

They matched each other perfectly. Ivy rested against his broad chest, moving with effortless grace. Every turn they took and every look they exchanged was full of feeling.
Watching them pulled me back to my own past.
At the banquet during the first year of our marriage, I once asked Ethan to dance with me. But at the time, I was so tense and unsure of myself that I kept awkwardly stepping on his shoes. He said nothing, yet his brows drew together slightly, and impatience flickered in his eyes.
After that, I never dared dance with him in public again.
It wasn’t because I didn’t know how. I just wasn’t someone he would slow his pace for, someone he would patiently lead.
Ivy’s sense of triumph had never been baseless.
She was the first person to receive his gentleness. He taught her German, made food for her, played piano for her, and danced with her. And I was always the one behind her, getting only what was left afterward.
That was when I understood that I had never really known Ethan at all.
Without thinking, I wanted to step back and leave this stifling place behind.
At that moment, as Ethan turned across the dance floor, his eyes passed through the crowd and landed on me.
The warmth in his gaze vanished the moment he recognized me.
He had finally seen me.
I looked away and did not meet his eyes again.
Lianne’s POV:
Thinking back on it now, I felt ridiculous for believing Ivy and Ethan would react with panic the moment I showed up. Not a single trace of shame showed on either of them.
I reached for my coat, ready to leave that suffocating place, but Frank stepped in before I could get away.
He dipped his head slightly, then looked at me with quiet sincerity. “Lianne, will you give me a dance?”
