Chapter 757:
“I really am sorry, but those instructions came from management. We’re only following orders.” Polite but unwavering, the cashier reached over and removed the bottle of vodka from my cart.
I let out a helpless sigh.
There was no point arguing, so I paid for the two bottles of beer along with a few bottles of juice.
Two bottles of beer? That wouldn’t even give me a buzz, much less get me drunk.
The endless sleepless nights had driven me to the edge. More than anything, I needed one long, peaceful night’s rest to clear my mind. Otherwise, I wasn’t sure I could make it until the day of the final verdict.
As I stepped out of the supermarket, my eyes fell on the glowing sign of the liquor store across the street. There was no way their system had conveniently locked down alcohol sales too.
I hurried across when the light changed, but the moment I stepped onto the opposite sidewalk, my phone began vibrating nonstop inside my bag.
A familiar name I hadn’t seen in ages appeared on the screen. It was Noah.
The instant I saw his name, my heart lurched and my breath caught in my throat. Noah was Ethan’s assistant. If he was calling me now, it could only mean it had something to do with Ethan.
“Hello? Noah? Did something happen to Ethan?” I asked in a panic.

“Ms. Riley, please don’t worry. Alpha is fine.” Noah’s voice remained calm and professional, just as it always had been. The tightness in my chest eased slightly. He continued, “I’m sorry for calling so late, but we’ve run into an emergency.”
“What happened?”
“There’s a serious problem with the project you were responsible for. The new director made a major mistake while merging the core algorithms, and now the entire team’s data has been locked. The situation is very urgent. If we can’t fix it before tomorrow morning, Voss Group will suffer heavy losses when the market opens. I need to meet with you as soon as possible so we can resolve it.”
His explanation left me skeptical.
Before resigning, I had done everything possible to make the handover seamless. I had prepared the documentation with painstaking detail, almost like a textbook, and carefully reviewed every interface and every crucial line of code. There should have been no room for a mistake like that.
Even so, this project was something I had devoted countless hours and endless effort to. I couldn’t bring myself to stand aside and watch it fall apart.
“I’ll come over right away.” I forced down my exhaustion and pushed aside my lingering craving for the alcohol I’d never gotten the chance to drink.
“That’s not necessary. Just send me your location. I’m already on my way.”
After the call ended, I stood outside the liquor store, staring quietly at the rows of bottles displayed behind the glass. After a long moment, I finally looked away.
My plan to drink myself into a deep, dreamless sleep had been completely ruined by that unexpected phone call.
