Chapter 683:
As expected, the moment I got there, I found that bastard Alex bothering her and refusing to leave her alone.
Even now, the memory made me tighten my grip around the glass.
There were simply too many men surrounding her. So many that I wanted nothing more than to hide her somewhere no one else could ever reach.
Lianne stirred in bed. She turned onto her side and let out a faint groan of discomfort.
I snapped back to the present, walked over, and sat beside her. I carefully brushed the loose strands of hair away from her face, then said softly, “Lianne, wake up and drink some milk. It’ll make your stomach feel better.”
It seemed I had pulled her out of a pleasant dream. She lazily swatted at the glass, curled herself deeper beneath the quilt, and pulled the blanket over her face. Her sleepy voice came out muffled and annoyed. “Don’t want it… take it away…”
Keeping my patience, I carefully helped her sit up, quilt and all, trying once again to coax her into drinking.

But she became even more irritated and shouted from underneath the covers, “Go away! Stop bothering me!”
My first attempt to get her to drink the milk ended in total failure.
A few seconds later, though, she suddenly sat straight up, startling me.
She squinted, her eyes unfocused without her glasses, staring directly at me. She sounded completely convinced of herself as she declared, “Who are you? You’re pretending to be Ethan, aren’t you?”
I rubbed my temples as I felt a headache coming on. Then I patiently explained, “It’s me, Ethan. I finished my business early and came back, Lianne.”
“Liar.” She gave a dismissive snort and leaned toward me unsteadily, as though trying to examine my face. “Ethan is in Nshire on a business trip. He’s busy. He wouldn’t be here.”
I offered her the glass of milk again, but she stubbornly turned her face away. She even scooted toward the far corner of the bed as if I were some kind of creep. “Prove it. If you can’t prove you’re Ethan, I’m calling the police.”
I considered getting her glasses out of her bag.
Right now, without them, I was probably nothing more than a blurry outline to her.
“Then tell me, how am I supposed to prove it?” I asked gently, choosing to play along with her train of thought.
The other times she had gotten drunk, she would just curl up and sleep. I had never seen her this stubborn.
I figured my unexpected return had caught her completely off guard, putting her protective instincts on high alert. That also explained why she had slapped me back at the villa.
She tilted her head and thought for a while. Then, suddenly, she leaned in until her flushed face was only inches from mine.
I could smell the faint trace of alcohol on her breath and clearly see her delicate lashes trembling.
