Chapter 921:
Yet even after the doctors examined him thoroughly, they couldn’t determine the reason for his condition. Outside the room, the attending physician lowered his mask, his expression grave. “Alpha’s vital signs and physical indicators are all within normal ranges. We haven’t detected any evidence of poisoning or internal damage. At this point, we believe he’s experiencing hallucinations and a severe physical response brought on by overwhelming psychological stress.”
My concern only deepened.
No poisoning? Then what had caused him to collapse so suddenly? And why was he speaking as though he were trapped inside some strange nightmare?
I urged Noah to call Melisa anyway. “Let Melisa examine him. She’s a witch. She may notice something the doctors overlooked.”
Noah agreed and stepped outside to make the call, leaving me alone beside Ethan.
I lowered myself into the chair near his bed and quietly watched him.
His complexion was unnaturally pale. Even while unconscious, his eyebrows remained drawn together, as though whatever haunted his mind refused to let him rest.
More than once, my hand lifted toward his face, only for me to stop before making contact and slowly withdraw.
I forced down the softness rising inside me. Ethan and I were strangers now. There was no reason for me to let old feelings surface again. Then, without warning, a broken murmur escaped him.
“I won’t let you die… I won’t let you die…”
The same words left him repeatedly. His brow tightened further, his muscles stiffening as his fingers twisted into the sheets.

The sight of his distress stirred something instinctive inside me. Before I could think better of it, I reached across and enclosed his hand with mine.
“I’m here,” I whispered softly. “I’m here. It’s okay, Ethan. You’re safe now.”
His eyes flew open.
They were unfocused, clouded with confusion, as though he hadn’t fully returned to reality.
But somehow, he seemed to recognize that I was there. With whatever strength remained in him, he abruptly pulled me toward himself.
His arms closed firmly around my waist, leaving barely any space between us. I tried to free myself, but my resistance only caused his hold to tighten.
“I’ll save you… Lianne. I’ll save you…” His voice was rough and faint, yet every word carried an unwavering desperation. I tried to calm him. “Ethan, settle down. I’m alright, and you’re alright too.”
I pushed against him, intending to create some distance, but then I noticed his eyes. They were bloodshot, and a tear had gathered along the corner, trembling on the verge of falling.
I went completely still. A moment later, the tear slipped down his cheek. Acting on instinct, I reached up and brushed it away.
The instant my fingers touched his skin, I recoiled slightly from the heat.
He was burning. Even his breath felt unnaturally warm, as though his body were struggling against an intense fever.
I was still staring at him, momentarily stunned, when his hand suddenly closed around my wrist.
He pushed himself upright and leaned toward me. Before I had time to react, his lips met mine.
The familiarity of it struck me all at once. Even weakened by whatever was happening to him, the kiss carried an intensity that left me momentarily stunned.
For several seconds, my thoughts disappeared completely. His lips were scorching against mine, trembling faintly as they remained there.
