Chapter 407:
“Current mate?” Noah blinked, visibly confused. “He has been single these past three years. There hasn’t been a single she-wolf around him. Where did this so-called mate come from?”
“Stop covering for him.” I let out a bitter laugh as the image of the possessive bite mark on Ethan’s neck flashed through my mind again. “I saw the marks myself. Nobody leaves marks like that unless they’re intimately involved. Since he’s already moved on, then he should let me go too.”
I grabbed Noah’s sleeve tightly, my composure nearly breaking apart. “Please. Just help me transfer somewhere else. Anywhere is fine: overseas, a remote branch, some forgotten project team. I don’t care. Just don’t make me see him every single…”
Before I could finish speaking, an icy pressure suddenly descended behind me.
The overwhelming Alpha aura hit so hard that my entire spine stiffened instantly. The unfinished words lodged themselves in my throat.
“He can’t help you.” That deep, magnetic voice finally came from behind me, cold enough to freeze the air itself.
Lianne’s POV
Noah escaped so quickly that it was almost comical. The little wave he gave me before leaving looked less like reassurance and more like a silent goodbye before walking someone to their execution.
The corridor fell deathly quiet after he left, leaving only the sound of my uneven breathing echoing in the stillness.
This entire floor was considered a restricted area. Aside from Ethan and Noah, almost nobody ever came here.

Instinctively, I stepped backward until my shoulders pressed against the cold elevator doors, as though a few inches of distance could somehow protect me from Ethan’s overwhelming presence.
But in front of a top-tier Alpha, that kind of resistance was laughably useless.
Seeing him this close again was far worse than I had imagined.
The faint cedarwood scent clinging to him mixed with that naturally oppressive aura of authority, wrapping around me like an invisible net that tightened with every breath I took.
My heartbeat spiraled completely out of control, slamming violently against my ribs until my entire body felt numb from it.
“What exactly are you avoiding?” He lifted an eyebrow slightly, his eyes studying my face with the kind of calm scrutiny that made escape feel impossible.
“I’m not avoiding anything.” I forced myself to raise my head, though my voice betrayed me with the slightest tremor. “I just think that since you’ve already moved on, we should keep our distance. I don’t want your… new mate to misunderstand anything. If she found out you personally came to pick me up, she’d probably be upset.”
The words “new mate” tasted bitter enough to cut my throat on the way out.
Ethan did not answer immediately. Instead, he let out a low snort that was impossible to read.
“Come inside. We’ll talk there.” He turned and walked toward the office as though he already knew I had no choice but to follow.
“We can talk here. I’ll leave once we’re done.” I remained rooted in place, stubbornly clutching onto the last scraps of dignity I had left.
