Chapter 958:
He stared at me. Slowly, the uncertainty in his eyes disappeared, replaced by tenderness.
Then I remembered something else. “What about Melisa? We’re still pretending to be separated in front of everyone. If I suddenly move into one of your properties, won’t that make her suspicious?”
A quiet laugh escaped him. Clearly, he’d already considered that possibility. “We’ll make it look like you demanded compensation from me. We’ll tell everyone you refused to leave empty-handed after our relationship fell apart, so you pressured me into giving you the property. You can even make it look like you threatened to expose me if I refused. It fits perfectly with the story we’re selling.”
For a moment, I stared at him. Then I burst out laughing. “You’ve seriously planned every detail.”
“Naturally.” He lifted one eyebrow with obvious satisfaction. Then his expression changed slightly. “Now that you mention it, you were incredibly convincing when you acted like you didn’t care about me. You played the part so well that there were moments when I almost believed you.”
I shot him a helpless look. “You’re still holding that against me?”
“I remember it clearly.” His gaze deepened. “The way you looked at me was so distant. It hurt more than you probably realized.”
His tone changed immediately, carrying a hint of jealousy. “Has Frank been in contact with you lately?”
I sighed. “Why are you bringing him into this again?”
“I’m only asking.” He turned his head away with a faint grumble. “He used to follow you around everywhere.”
His expression was so obviously jealous that I couldn’t decide whether to laugh or scold him.

I reached up, gently turned his face back toward mine, and held his gaze. “Ethan, if you want, I’ll take you to my father’s grave. I want to explain everything properly and put all those things behind us. I don’t want any misunderstanding continuing to come between us.”
He went still. The jealousy in his expression gradually disappeared, replaced by something much deeper.
He lowered his head until his forehead touched mine. His voice was quiet when he answered, “Okay. Once we’ve dealt with everything, I’ll go with you.”
I nodded.
I had to admit, Ethan had become surprisingly gentle and considerate lately.
Resting against him, I listened to the steady beat beneath his chest, and a sense of calm settled over me.
Ethan’s POV:
Several days later, it was time to put our next act into motion.
I lay motionless on a hospital bed, deliberately pretending that the poison had suddenly become worse. My eyes remained shut, my forehead drawn tightly together. I kept my breaths short and uneven, occasionally forcing out a weak cough to make my condition appear as serious as possible.
When Melisa hurried into the room, I slowly turned my head in her direction and forced my eyelids open as though even that small movement required tremendous effort.
She rushed to my bedside. For a brief moment, genuine concern crossed her features as she took in the sight of me.
