Chapter 271

Chapter 271:
Fear like a living thing clawed at my chest. I had never felt anything so raw.
The terror of losing someone I loved consumed me entirely.
My father was gone. Harold was gone. And now Ethan…
Even with the mate bond between us broken, even though anger and resentment should have held me at bay, seeing him lying there like that made my world tilt and crumble.
Without our mate bond, I couldn’t sense his heartbeat through the mind link.
That absence drove a panic into me deeper than anything I had known.
“Please… don’t leave me…” I leaned over him, tears cascading freely, streaking my cheeks.
I was cursed, just as Nancy had warned.
Misfortune seemed to follow anyone who came near me. I only dragged people down with me.
“Don’t cry. I’m fine.”
A voice, rough and rasping, broke the stillness of the room.

I snapped my head up, eyes locking with a pair of bloodshot orbs that somehow still glimmered with life.
Ethan was awake.
He met me with a fragile, shaky smile. His face was still pale, but that faint curve of his lips made him heartbreakingly handsome.
I stared at him, utterly frozen, words lodged somewhere deep in my throat, my heart hammering in a chaotic rhythm against my ribs.
“Too happy to speak?” He offered a crooked smile and lifted a hand, intending to brush away my tears, only to wince sharply as the movement tugged at his bandages.
Snapping back to myself, I hurriedly wiped my cheeks and turned my face away, stubbornness heating my voice. “Who’s happy? I was terrified you wouldn’t make it through surgery. I’d never forgive myself.”
I jabbed the call button without hesitation.
A nurse appeared within moments. After a careful check, she said, “The Alpha has three broken ribs, one of which punctured a lung. When he was brought in, it was extremely serious. He also has a mild concussion. But his healing ability is exceptional. Now that he’s awake, rest is all he needs.”
My palms grew slick with cold sweat at the mention of a punctured lung.
Once the nurse left, silence settled over the room like a thick, awkward blanket.
“Were you scared just now?” Ethan shifted slightly, his head turning to meet my gaze, a flicker of tentative hope in his bloodshot eyes. “Afraid I wouldn’t come back… like your father and Grandpa?”
I let my eyes fall, tracing the lines of my interlaced fingers, my voice barely a whisper. “It feels like everyone I care about eventually leaves. I thought you’d be the same.”
“I won’t.” His promise was soft, steady, a quiet strength that made my chest tighten. “Lianne, I’m still here. The Moon Goddess isn’t taking me yet.”
He lingered, eyes sharp and searching, as if trying to read every hidden corner of my heart. “You cried so much earlier. Does that mean you still care for me?”
I didn’t answer outright. I only met his hopeful gaze and murmured, “Ethan, when you’re discharged, let’s have a meal together.”
