Chapter 749:
At eleven o’clock last night, I had called Ethan’s number seventeen times in a row.
My heart shot into my throat. Panic took over as I dialed the number again.
“Sorry, the number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable…”
The same cold, automated message greeted me.

I leaned heavily against the bathroom sink and slowly let out a long, shaky breath.
I was still blocked.
Those seventeen calls from last night must have been nothing more than my drunken self dialing the same number over and over. Since Ethan had blocked me, there was no way he could have known any of it had happened.
So the vague memory of hearing his voice had been nothing but an illusion.
I looked at my red-rimmed eyes reflected in the mirror and let out a bitter laugh.
“Lianne, wake up,” I whispered to my reflection. “Today is the day you’ll finally get justice for your father. Don’t throw away the last bit of your dignity for someone you’ve already lost…”
Ethan’s POV
The Maybach moved smoothly through the busy streets, the silence inside broken only by the soft hum of the air conditioner.
From the rearview mirror, Noah studied my face carefully, then reported in a low voice, “Alpha, Jeremy attended the industry seminar in your place. Everything has gone smoothly so far.”
Without lifting my gaze from the report on my laptop, I answered simply, “Okay.”
Lately, the Voss Group had poured all its resources into acquiring an electronic technology project. Endless meetings and trivial issues had taken over nearly every hour of my day.
As I got out of the car and walked into the company building, I was on the phone with a partner from one of our joint ventures. The man eagerly tried to convince me to fund their electric vehicle project, sweetening the offer with terms like a five-year warranty and full vehicle recalls in the event of any defects.
He stressed, “Alpha, this is the step that removes consumers’ biggest psychological concern.”
I let out a cold laugh as I kept walking. “From a customer’s point of view, that sounds attractive. But as an investor, the enormous after-sales expenses would cut directly into my returns. The Voss Group invests to make profits, not for charity. I’m not interested.”
I hung up, making my position clear.
When the elevator reached the top floor, I walked into my office. It looked exactly the same as the day I’d left months ago. Every corner was spotless, but the room felt as lifeless and cold as an icehouse.
Noah had kept his questions to himself for the entire trip, but once the office door shut behind us, he could no longer hold back. “Alpha, I don’t understand. Why did you come back so suddenly? And why did you have Jeremy attend the seminar in your place?”
Rubbing my aching temples, I walked over to the window and looked toward the distant courthouse standing beneath the gray sky. My voice was low as I replied, “Today is the first day of Rola’s trial.”
