Chapter 589:
Clearly offended by what I’d said, Melisa snapped angrily, “Stop talking, Lianne! Do you think love is something you can simply hand to another person? Do you think I’d ever stoop low enough to take away your Alpha?”
She inhaled deeply, her eyes turning red as emotion thickened her voice. “Do you know what Ethan was like after he got hurt? He was barely alive during surgery. Even while slipping in and out of consciousness, he kept repeating your name again and again. Hearing him call for you was the only thing that kept me going through those terrifying hours. Nobody could ever replace you in his heart. I wouldn’t even try. Ethan belongs with you, Lianne. You are everything to him.”
The moment she finished speaking, she quickly turned away, leaving as though staying any longer would hurt too much. Her departing figure radiated unwavering resolve.
The courtyard fell silent once more, leaving only me behind.
Cold wind drifted through the empty space, stealing away the final traces of warmth.

All the emotions I had suppressed for so long finally shattered loose.
I covered my face with trembling hands and slowly sank down, muffled cries escaping through my fingers despite my efforts to contain them.
Hopelessness, grief, and agony crashed over me mercilessly, consuming me completely like a violent storm.
Ethan’s POV
It was deep into the night when I finally ended the virtual meeting with the elders. Their nonstop disputes over land boundaries had left a pounding ache behind my eyes.
Without thinking, I reached toward the other side of the bed, searching for the familiar warmth that always steadied me.
Instead, my hand met nothing but cold fabric.
Only then did it hit me that Lianne still hadn’t come back.
I immediately picked up my phone and called her.
The ringing echoed endlessly in my ears.
Then the automated message sounded. “The number you are trying to reach is currently unavailable.”
In that instant, every nightmare from the last three years returned at once, destroying the calm I had barely maintained.
Fear crushed my chest with brutal force. Panic exploded through me so violently that it felt impossible to breathe. Without bothering to put on proper clothes, I bolted from the hospital room barefoot, wearing only a thin robe, sprinting through the halls like a man possessed. All I could think about was finding her.
Ethan’s POV
Was… Lianne gone again?
The possibility hit me like wildfire tearing through dry timber, devouring every coherent thought until panic was all that remained.
I had given her my word. No matter the cost, I would uncover what truly happened to her father. I would stand between her and every burden my grandmother and the elders tried to force onto her shoulders.
I believed the time we spent together these past few days had meant something. I thought she finally saw that I meant every word I said.
But terror swallowed me whole. What if she had vanished again without warning? What if she chose to disappear the same way she had before, leaving me behind without a single goodbye?
“Lianne! Lianne!”
