Chapter 680:
Lianne tilted her head back. Her eyes were half open as she looked up at me with a silly grin. She waved her hands clumsily in front of her, first raising three fingers, then spreading all five as she muttered incoherently, “Five glasses… no… maybe fifty…”
She had no idea what was going on around her. Her raw vulnerability made my heart ache.
She rocked from side to side, barely able to keep her balance.
Frowning, I bent down and lifted her into my arms. The moment her feet left the ground, she reacted like a frightened deer. She struggled with all her strength, twisting wildly. In the middle of her struggling, her sharp nails scraped my neck.
“Let me go! Alex, put me down!” she shouted, her voice filled with fear and disgust.
She actually thought I was that bastard?
“Look at me,” I said, my voice low, carrying a hint of wounded pride. “Take a good look at who I am.”
The next moment, a sharp crack broke the silence.

My head jerked to the side as a burning pain spread across my cheek.
She had really slapped me because she believed I was that bastard.
“Lianne, it’s me. Ethan,” I said through gritted teeth, stressing every syllable of my name.
She went completely still, and all her struggling stopped at once.
She forced her eyes open and stared at me for a long moment. Then her body eased, and she melted against me.
She giggled, wrapped both arms around my neck, and buried her face in my neck. Her warm, uneven breaths brushed against my skin as she whispered, “Ethan… I knew it. You always come whenever I need you…”
At that moment, every trace of my anger was extinguished. Faced with her complete trust in her drunken state, all I could feel was helpless resignation.
Holding her a little closer, I carried her away from the villa.
On the drive back to the city, I glanced at her sleeping uneasily in the passenger seat. After a moment of thought, I turned the car around and drove toward our old house instead.
Ruby and Silas were there, and that home was filled with the happiest memories we had shared.
When I got inside, both children were still awake. They rushed toward us, excited to call for their mother, but I quickly pressed a finger to my lips, silently asking them to keep their voices down.
I was about to carry Lianne into the master bedroom, but when I reached the door, my hand stopped on the doorknob.
We were no longer mates, and I no longer had the right to sleep beside her.
I turned away and took her into one of the guest rooms, a room that had sat untouched for years.
No one had ever stayed in this house except Lianne and our kids, so the room had never truly been used. The neatly made bed still carried the clean, untouched scent of fresh linens.
I carefully laid her on the bed and took off her shoes.
Noticing the slight crease between her brows, I asked in a low voice, “Do you feel sick? Do you feel like throwing up?”
