Chapter 48:
“Come on, Lianne, don’t be stingy. How did you actually land the Alpha? Share some details with me.” Sylvia waved her champagne flute so close that her painted nail almost brushed my face.
A surge of disgust washed over me. I responded by squeezing my purse a little tighter.
“I never used any tactics,” I answered indifferently. I didn’t even bother to look in her direction.
I was being honest. When Ethan was paralyzed and forced into a wheelchair, I was the one who remained by his side.
Back then, all these high-society women treated him like a ghost. Now that he was powerful again, they were all crawling back to him.
It was pathetic.
“Get over yourself,” Sylvia muttered with a sneer from behind my back.
Without a word, I grabbed my appetizers and retreated to a quiet spot in the room.
However, I hadn’t even found a place to sit before a recognizable silhouette caught my eye.
It was Ivy.

She was dressed in a bold crimson gown that acted like a flare in the crowded room. She marched straight toward Ethan while he was busy talking to a group of powerful investors.
I stopped dead in my tracks. A sudden weight crashed into my ribs.
I couldn’t believe he was bold enough to show up with her.
“How is your ankle holding up?” a calm voice inquired from my side.
I shook off my shock and saw that Frank had joined me. He looked incredibly polished in a sleek, silver-gray suit.
“It’s healing well. Thank you for asking,” I replied with a strained grin.
“Are you here by yourself tonight?” he asked. He tilted his head while his eyes scanned the rest of the ballroom.
“I’m here with Ethan,” I admitted, though I couldn’t keep my voice from trembling slightly.
Naturally, my gaze drifted back to Ivy. She was standing before Ethan now.
The normally harsh lines of his face smoothed out. He dipped his head toward her so he could catch the quiet words she was whispering.
Previously, I had convinced myself that he only reserved that specific brand of kindness for me.
A sting of jealousy hit me right in the chest, forcing me to avert my eyes and scramble for a topic. “So, when does that big movie of yours actually start filming? I’d really like to stop by the set sometime.”
Frank let out a short laugh. “We’re kicking things off next week. Just so you know, though, Ivy is the lead. You still sure you want to stop by?”
My fingers went stiff against the leather of my purse.
Ivy again. She seemed to haunt every part of my existence, popping up in every direction and making it impossible for me to get away from her.
“In that case, I might skip it. Things have been pretty slammed for me lately,” I replied while looking down. My curiosity had vanished instantly.
“Just kidding,” Frank said, giving my shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “I’ll give you a shout when we actually get moving at the end of the month. You can always come hang out if you need a breather.”
