Chapter 681:
With her eyes closed, she gently shook her head. Her long hair fanned out messily across the pillow, making her small face look even more delicate.
Still uneasy, I called Noah and asked him to bring some medicine for her hangover.
The moment I ended the call, Lianne slowly lifted her hand and reached into the space beside her. Her fingers searched aimlessly, as though she were trying to hold on to something.
I stepped closer and wrapped my hand around hers. “I’m here,” I murmured softly.
Her fingers immediately tightened around mine, holding on as if she were clinging to a lifeline.
A moment later, her hazy eyes slowly opened. Her soft voice pierced straight through my heart. “Ethan… do you miss me?”

Her voice was barely above a whisper, yet those few words hit me hard.
I knew Lianne better than anyone. If she’d been sober, she would never have admitted something so honestly, no matter how much pain she was carrying.
Only the alcohol could strip away her defenses and bring out the feelings she kept buried.
I held her hand a little tighter, my thumb gently stroking her fingers. Leaning close enough for my breath to brush against her ear, I whispered, “Lianne, the real question is: when have I ever stopped missing you?”
Every word came from the deepest part of my heart, burning with emotions I had buried for far too long.
But she seemed not to hear me. She frowned, mumbled something I couldn’t understand, then pulled her hand away and turned onto her side with her back facing me.
I stayed beside the bed, silently looking at her frail figure as a faint, bitter smile appeared on my lips.
I stood there for a long while, waiting until her breathing settled into a slow, steady rhythm. Only then did I turn off the bedside lamp and quietly tiptoe out of the room.
Ruby and Silas were still waiting in the living room, sitting close together on the sofa like two little expectant puppies.
“Daddy, is Mommy okay?” Ruby asked, blinking up at me with her big, curious eyes.
“Mommy is just tired. She’s resting,” I replied, walking over and lifting her into my arms.
She immediately wrapped her little arms around my neck and asked with excitement, “When Mommy wakes up tomorrow, can she take me to the new candy shop? Mommy is the best! She’ll definitely buy me those shiny lollipops!”
Watching her innocent smile, I couldn’t help feeling worried. Ruby was so much like Lianne. She was pure-hearted and could be won over by the smallest acts of kindness.
Putting on a stern expression, I gently reminded her, “Ruby, if you want something, you can always ask Daddy. But you have to remember one thing: never accept anything from strangers, okay?”
“Okay! Daddy loves me the most!” Ruby said happily before planting a kiss on my cheek. Her simple display of affection instantly eased the heaviness weighing on my heart.
By the time I had tucked both children into bed, it was already very late.
