Chapter 794:
“I’m really grateful to you, Melisa,” I said sincerely. “Thank you for saving Ethan back then, and for taking such good care of me now.”
The line went quiet for a moment before Melisa answered, her voice distant, betraying no emotion. “You don’t have to thank me, Lianne. What happened between Ethan and me was nothing more than a transaction. I saved him because he was able to give me what I wanted.”
After the call ended, I sat alone in the empty bedroom, the word “transaction” playing over and over in my mind.
The suspicion inside me began to grow.
Someone like Melisa should easily have had access to wealth and fame on her own.
So what kind of transaction could have made someone like Ethan agree to her terms? What could she possibly have wanted, something that drove her to follow him across borders and care for him with such extraordinary attention?
What was she really after?
Ethan’s POV
The tension in the conference room had reached its breaking point. I stared at the final quotation displayed on the screen from our overseas partner, my fingertips unconsciously tapping against the tabletop.
Then my phone suddenly began vibrating.
The moment I saw the call was coming from the landline at home, my heart jumped. As soon as I answered, Silas’s crying voice filled my ears. “Daddy… come home quickly! Mommy fainted, and we can’t wake her up…”

My mind went completely blank, a deafening buzz filling my head. Every trace of rational thought disappeared in an instant.
I pushed back my chair and shot to my feet so abruptly that the coffee beside my hand tipped over.
“Alpha? We haven’t finished the signing yet…” the business partner called out in confusion.
I didn’t listen. I didn’t even stop to explain myself before rushing out of the conference room.
Cross-border projects? Millions in profit? None of that mattered anymore. The only thing that mattered was Lianne’s safety.
I drove home as fast as I could. The moment I pushed open the door, I saw Ruby and Silas curled up in the corner of the sofa, their eyes swollen and red from crying.
And there was Lianne, lying motionless on the carpet, her face deathly pale.
A sharp pain gripped my heart as I rushed forward and carefully lifted her into my arms. Her body was ice-cold, and her breathing was so faint I could barely feel it.
“Daddy, is Mommy going to die?” Ruby grabbed onto my sleeve, trembling as tears streamed down her face.
I forced myself to suppress the panic rising inside me. After kissing both children’s foreheads, I spoke in a rough but firm voice. “She won’t. Mommy is only sleeping. Daddy is here, and she’ll be okay.”
The ambulance sped toward the hospital.
I stood outside the emergency room, my eyes fixed on the bright red light above the door. Every second that passed felt unbearably long, each moment slowly tearing apart what little patience I had left.
The helplessness was driving me mad. I wanted nothing more than to destroy everything around me.
