Chapter 800:
Suddenly, a large, warm hand enveloped mine, fingers weaving firmly through my own.
“I just wanted to hold your hand,” Ethan said, his eyes still fixed ahead, his voice low and calm.
The heat from his palm slowly spread through my skin. Somehow, my pounding heart began to steady.
“Don’t worry,” I whispered, as though I were trying to reassure myself as much as him. “Tracy is a strong, wonderful person. She’ll pull through.”
Ethan suddenly lowered his head and looked into my eyes with a deep, unreadable gaze. After a moment of silence, he finally asked in a hoarse voice, “When you gave birth to Ruby and Silas… did you suffer this badly too?”
My heart tightened painfully. My first instinct was to dismiss the question with a casual “I don’t remember,” hoping to bury the memory of that terrifying experience, when I had nearly died.
But looking into his piercing eyes, I knew he had probably already found the records of my traumatic labor and the severe blood loss I had suffered.
“That’s all in the past,” I said, lowering my eyes as I spoke calmly. “It was a choice I made myself. It had nothing to do with you, so you don’t need to blame yourself.”
“Lianne, love isn’t about pointing fingers or deciding who was at fault.” His fingers tightened slightly around mine, his voice carrying a heartbreaking sincerity.

I froze, looking at his face. Beneath the harsh hospital lights, his expression was deep and earnest. After a long silence, I finally murmured, “Ethan, honestly, I don’t really know how to love. No one ever taught me how to love, or how to accept it.”
I paused, then met his slightly quivering eyes. Sincerely, I continued, “But I’m willing to learn. Not for anyone else. For you.”
As soon as those words left my mouth, I saw the tension that had weighed on Ethan for days finally ease. The corners of his lips lifted into a small smile.
His face lit up, like the first sunlight breaking through after a bitter winter.
Ethan’s POV
The white lights lining the hospital hallway blurred before my eyes, while the suffocating air weighed so heavily on my chest that every breath felt like a struggle.
Jeremy looked like a wild beast trapped in a cage. His bloodshot eyes never left the operating room doors, and every muscle in his body stayed tense.
I went over and gripped his shoulder firmly. My voice was calm. “Pull yourself together, Jeremy. The best doctors in the city are with Tracy. She’s in good hands. She’ll be alright.”
Lianne stood quietly beside me, her slim frame almost swallowed by the oversized coat she wore.
She bit her lip, looking deeply worried, then tugged at my sleeve. “Ethan, I want to stay with Tracy… even if I can only wait behind the screen.”
