Chapter 285:
The image of Ruby’s tear-streaked face, sniffles and all, suddenly filled my mind, and my stern heart softened instantly.
For the past three years, Ruby had been the center of my entire world.
I inhaled deeply and surrendered to the pull of longing. “Alright, come over. I miss my little girl, too.”
It wasn’t until Tracy’s message confirmed that she and Ruby had arrived at the hotel lobby that I finally lifted my gaze from the chaotic blueprints sprawled across my desk.
I hurriedly passed the remaining work to Alex and practically sprinted back to the hotel.
The door had barely opened when a small figure tumbled into my arms.
“Mommy!”
Ruby’s sweet, childish voice washed over me like a wave, instantly dissolving every ounce of anxiety.
I dropped to my knees and wrapped her tiny body in a tight embrace, pressing a firm kiss to her plump cheek. My heart felt utterly full.
“I missed you too, baby.”

Tracy followed close behind, bags in hand, watching with amusement. “When I brought Ruby in earlier, everyone in the lobby couldn’t stop staring. One person even asked if she was a child star on vacation.”
Lianne’s POV:
A sudden tightness gripped my chest, and my smile faltered for an instant. I lowered my voice, cautioning Tracy, “Be careful about taking Ruby out in public, especially in a business hotel like this.”
Fear ran through me. Even the tiniest chance of someone from Voss Group noticing Ruby was a risk I could never allow.
After all, more than one person had remarked on how much Ruby’s features mirrored Ethan’s.
Tracy sank onto the couch with an exaggerated pout, crossing her arms in mock indignation. “It’s been three years, Lianne. I hear Ethan has a new fated mate. His wedding news is everywhere. So what if he learns about Ruby? He may have been devoted back then, but now he’s moved on.”
I dropped my gaze, masking the flicker of bitterness in my eyes, and spoke in a quiet, almost detached tone. “I was the one who chose to sever the bond. It’s only natural for him to continue and begin again.”
Still, whenever I pictured Ethan holding another woman’s hand, walking to the Moon Goddess Altar under the blessings of others, my chest would tighten as if pierced by thousands of tiny needles.
But these three years on the run had taught me one hard truth: we were never meant to exist in the same world. Forcing it would lead only to heartbreak.
Tracy exhaled heavily, studying me with an expression tangled between concern and understanding. “When you first left him, I thought you’d regret it. After your difficult childbirth, when you nearly didn’t make it off the operating table, I feared you might reach out to him.”
I offered a bitter, tight smile, my voice low. “Once I chose to walk away completely, I couldn’t leave a door open for myself. To do so would have been unfair to him and a betrayal to myself.”
