Chapter 948

Chapter 948:
I pressed my face against him, gripping the fabric of his shirt while the tears continued to fall. Only now did I realize how much suffering Ethan had concealed from me.
Everything he had done with Melisa suddenly made sense. The way he had tolerated her advances, even allowing her to present herself as his fiancée, had never meant he had betrayed me. He had simply been keeping her convinced that she had control over him. He had endured every moment spent around someone he despised and forced himself to hurt me by walking away, all because he needed to obtain the antidote from her.
The realization left a dull ache inside me as I imagined how long he had carried that burden without letting me know.
Still, I didn’t want the mood to remain so heavy, so I forced a teasing smile. “You certainly have no shortage of women interested in you. First Ivy, then Melisa. You must be pretty irresistible.”
His eyes dropped toward me. “Are you jealous?”
“Not even a little.”
His confidence was almost infuriating. Then he turned the tables on me. “You are. Besides, what about all those men who liked you? Frank, for one. And there were others before him. What were their names? Brian was one, wasn’t he? Then there was that man who worked in finance. I remember every one of them.”
I slipped my arms around his neck and laughed under my breath. “It doesn’t matter. There’s only one man I love.”
He went still. A gentle warmth appeared in his eyes.
I leaned toward his ear and whispered with deliberate mischief, “But if you don’t know how to appreciate me, Frank could still have an opening.”
The amusement disappeared from his face immediately.

“Fine, fine. I was teasing you.” I hurried to reassure him.
Then, without warning, dizziness swept over me. My body swayed, and I nearly stumbled. Ethan caught the change instantly. His expression hardened with concern as he studied me. His eyes searched mine. “Lianne, what’s wrong? You didn’t take the medicine, did you?”
“I did.” I tried to hold his gaze, but the spinning sensation intensified with every passing moment.
His face grew solemn. “Don’t lie to me.”
This time, I couldn’t bring myself to deny it.
Instead, I lifted my face and placed a gentle kiss against his mouth. When I pulled back, I watched fear spread across his features before speaking quietly. “Melisa accidentally revealed something. She said that once the medicine was taken, the dizziness and hallucinations would disappear completely. That’s when I understood. The strange symptoms you’ve been experiencing, the same ones none of the doctors could explain, were identical to those I once suffered. Your illness isn’t a coincidence. It’s the poison affecting you too.”
I paused, then continued, “That’s why I can’t stand by and let you suffer through this all alone.”
The color drained from his face. His fingers closed firmly around my wrist.
Urgency shook his voice as panic filled his eyes. “Where’s the medicine? Do you have it here? Take it right now.”
“Ethan!”
