Chapter 296:
Sitting on a tiny chair, Ruby tilted her face up toward me, her bright eyes sparkling with excitement. “Mommy, I met a super handsome man downstairs! He even helped me buy candy!”
A laugh slipped out before I could stop myself. It amazed me how a three-year-old could already notice handsome men like that. She must have picked it up from Tracy.
I reached out and lightly pinched her soft cheeks. “Oh, really? And just how handsome was he? More handsome than Alex?”
Without hesitation, Ruby nodded with complete seriousness. “Way more handsome!” Her eyes sparkled even more. “I want to see him again tomorrow! And… he still has my five dollars. That’s all the money I have.”
Her earnest expression made me laugh again, and I tapped her nose playfully. “You’re too young to be thinking about men. Go to sleep now. Tomorrow, I’ll take you out for something tasty.”
Ruby let out a laugh at that.
Soon, I settled her into bed and pulled her into my arms.
I planned to hum her a lullaby, but she was already exhausted and drifting off. Even so, she murmured softly near my ear, “Mommy, I miss my brother… That handsome man looks just as good as him…”

Those words struck me like a blade laced with poison, piercing straight through my chest.
In an instant, I was fully alert, a cold chill running through my body.
Almost without thinking, I reached out and covered Ruby’s mouth, my heart racing wildly.
“Don’t talk about your brother,” I whispered urgently. “Ruby, you have to remember this. You can’t tell anyone about him. Not a single word.”
My sudden reaction clearly frightened Ruby. Her drowsy eyes were filled with tears, and she looked at me with quiet fear.
When she nodded over and over, I slowly pulled my hand away and hugged her close, my heartbeat still racing. “I’m sorry, sweetheart,” I said softly. “I didn’t mean to scare you. But you have to remember this. No matter who asks, you can’t talk about your brother. And you can’t tell anyone what he looks like, alright?”
Ruby let out a small, shaky sound in response, then shut her eyes and drifted to sleep.
Sleep, however, wouldn’t come to me.
After listening to Ruby’s steady breathing for a while, I stood up and moved toward the window. My fingers trembled as I unlocked my phone and opened an encrypted video.
On the screen, a little boy dressed in a neat suit sat at a desk, quietly reading.
He carried himself with surprising composure, his back straight and his expression calm in a way that didn’t belong to a child his age.
That face… it mirrored Ethan’s almost perfectly, every detail unmistakably the same.
He was my son, Ruby’s twin brother, Silas Riley.
I had nearly lost my life bringing the two of them into the world.
But as the years passed, Silas began to resemble Ethan more and more, even inheriting that distant presence.
And that terrified me.
If Ethan ever discovered Silas existed, he wouldn’t hesitate to take him away. Considering his power, I wouldn’t stand a chance against him.
