Chapter 950:
His forehead creased deeper, concern weighing heavily in his voice. “Your body isn’t strong enough. I’m scared you won’t withstand it. I can’t stand seeing you in pain every time the poison kicks in. Do you understand what that does to me?”
A faint smile touched my lips as I raised my hand and gently smoothed the tension between his brows. “The antidote is already inside you. There’s nothing we can undo now. Worrying about me won’t change what has happened. Think about it. We’re supposed to face this together. If you have to suffer anyway, wouldn’t it be better for me to stand beside you instead of watching helplessly from a distance? If I cooperate with your act, we’ll have a much better chance of dealing with Melisa. Don’t you agree?”
His brows remained drawn together. When he answered, his voice carried a faint tremor. “Lianne, do you know what frightens me most? Losing you. Every night, I find myself wondering what I’d do if you weren’t here anymore. I can’t even let myself imagine a life without you.”
Pain tightened around my heart. I wrapped my arms around him, holding him as tightly as I could and pressing my face against his chest.
“If losing me scares you so much, then what about me?” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “You’ve told me before that you wouldn’t commit suicide if I were gone. I’m no different. If anything happened to you, I wouldn’t be able to carry on either. Ethan, we can’t give up. We have to survive this. For one another, and for our children. Do you understand?”
He said nothing. Instead, his embrace became firmer, his chin settling against my hair as his breathing grew heavier.
I pulled back enough to see his face, determination steady in my eyes. “I’m not that frightened, helpless woman anymore. You’re the man I fought so hard to bring back into my life. I finally have you again, and I’m not letting you go.”
His lips parted, seemingly ready to respond.
Before he could speak, I gently covered his mouth with my palm and shook my head. “Don’t think about backing away anymore. Just take my hand and keep moving forward with me. Can you do that?”

He studied me in silence.
For a long while, conflict remained visible in his eyes. Hesitation battled against affection until, eventually, he released a weary breath.
Then he gave a small nod.
I smiled, hoping to soothe the concern still weighing on him. “From now on, you don’t need to stay away from me on purpose. We just have to make sure Melisa’s men don’t see us together. Find a way to shake them off, come home, and stay with me. In front of everyone else, I’ll continue acting as though we’ve ended things, and I’ll help maintain the illusion. Isn’t that better? You won’t have to keep enduring her presence solely because you’re trying to keep me safe.”
His eyes lowered until they met mine.
When he finally spoke, his words carried absolute conviction. “Lianne, I won’t allow anything to happen to you. Whatever comes our way, I’ll remain beside you. I give you my word.”
I smiled and nodded before rising onto my toes and pressing a soft kiss against his lips. “Okay. I’ll hold you to that.”
