Chapter 493:
But I couldn’t ignore the storm brewing behind Rola’s eyes, and I had no desire to become the catalyst for an argument between them.
Besides, the burden of the secret I was carrying, the agreement involving our children, weighed heavily on my heart. I simply couldn’t face Rola right now.
“It’s okay, Ethan.” I gently slipped my hand from his grasp and forced a faint smile. “I was planning to check on Tracy anyway. You two can talk.”
Before he could object, I lowered my head and hurried out of the room.
Ethan’s POV:
The moment the door closed behind Lianne, the warmth vanished from my expression.
“Why did you deliberately drive her away?” I asked Rola, my voice low and rough but carrying unmistakable authority. “Grandma, I remember a time when you liked her.”
Rola stood at the foot of the bed, her dark green velvet gown making her appear like a cold, immovable statue.

She let out a scornful snort, her words sharp. “That was before. Ethan, take a good look at yourself now! You nearly died. Do you have any idea how many rare remedies the Thorn Pack had to use to save your life? How much effort the elders poured into keeping you alive? You’re in this condition because of her, so she has no place by your side.”
Her sanctimonious justification only made my blood run colder.
I understood Rola all too well. Having held the highest position of power in the Thorn Pack for decades, she was never someone ruled by emotion. Her decision to allow Lianne to stay with me, and even to overlook our reckless behavior the previous night despite my injured state, was surely not an act of kindness.
“Tell me, what did you demand from Lianne?” I locked my gaze onto hers, my voice sharp. “What did she have to give up in exchange for a whole month by my side?”
Rola deliberately avoided my eyes and turned toward the window. Her expression remained cold and impenetrable. “There was no bargain. Considering your injuries, I merely gave her the opportunity to make amends for her mistakes.”
“That’s a lie.” A bitter laugh escaped me as another surge of pain tore through my chest. The burning ache spread throughout my body. “Grandma, don’t insult my intelligence. A woman like you, who places bloodlines above everything else, would never compromise without gaining something in return.”
I paused before speaking each word with deliberate clarity. “Silas and Ruby.”
Rola’s body stiffened almost imperceptibly. At last, she turned back to face me, no longer bothering to conceal the ambition shining in her eyes. “That’s right,” she admitted. “Your children should never be left wandering outside the pack. They possess exceptional talent and belong in the Thorn Pack, where they can receive the finest training and secure the brightest future possible. Following a woman who has nothing to offer them will only condemn them to hardship and a life spent hiding.”
