Chapter 179:
But Lianne merely lowered her lashes, hiding her eyes. “I don’t want our relationship made public anymore. My wolf is gone. That means I’ve always been in an awkward position within the pack. If this becomes public, how do you think the other she-wolves will look at me? I don’t want to throw myself back into the spotlight just to get hurt again.”
A sharp pain suddenly tightened in my chest.
Regret and a heavy ache pressed down inside me.
In the past three years, not only had I failed to protect her, I had become the one who hurt her most.
“Let go of me. You should get back to work.” She pushed at my shoulder, and there was a note of weariness in her voice.
As I saw how badly she wanted to escape, the dark possessiveness inside me began to stir again.
Instead of releasing her, I pulled her tighter into my arms. “I’ll let you go, but only if you call me ‘darling’ first.”
Lianne’s whole body stiffened. She jerked her head up to glare at me and ground out through clenched teeth, “Have you lost your mind? This is the office! Let me go. Right now!”
“No.” Like a shameless brat, I buried my face in the hollow of her neck. “Be good. Call me that, and I’ll let you go. I always keep my word.”
She was so furious that her chest rose and fell sharply. Through the thin fabric of her shirt, the softness of her breasts brushed against me, and the sensation made desire surge through me so abruptly that my throat moved involuntarily.

We remained locked like that for a long while before she finally gave in.
She caught her full lower lip lightly between her teeth and spoke in a voice so soft it was nearly impossible to hear. “Darling.”
“I didn’t catch that. Say it louder.” I acted as though I hadn’t heard her on purpose, my hand moving restlessly along her waist.
“Darling! Happy now? Let me go!” She nearly yelled it, her face burning a seductive shade of red.
Only then did I ease my hold a little, though I still kept her gathered against me, dropping my voice as I finally got to the point. “The visas are done. In a few days, we’re leaving on our trip. Just the two of us, alright?”
She didn’t ask where we were going or how long we would stay. She only nodded halfheartedly.
The instant my arms loosened, she darted off like a frightened fawn, grabbing her bag and rushing out of the office.
Watching the office door sway after her, I couldn’t stop a faint smile from touching my lips. The heaviness in my chest lifted considerably, replaced by the quiet satisfaction of getting something back that had once been mine.
But it didn’t last for long.
The phone on my desk began vibrating without pause. I glanced down at the screen. It was a message from Ivy.
“Ethan, why can’t I reach you through the mind link? Did you block me?”
I frowned and quickly typed back, my fingers moving across the screen. “Don’t contact me through the mind link anymore. Lianne won’t like it.”
