Chapter 274:
With unsteady hands, I pulled out the vial I had hidden long ago beneath the pillow and carefully poured it into the glass of water on the bedside table.
Frank had given it to me, a potent sedative strong enough to put even the most powerful Alpha under for twelve hours.
The water shut off.
Ethan stepped out, drying his hair with a towel, surprise flickering across his face when he saw I was still awake. “Why aren’t you asleep yet?”
“I wanted to wait for you.” I steadied my voice, lifted the glass, and held it toward him. “Drink this. It’ll help clear your system. You had quite a lot tonight.”
He took the glass without hesitation, draining it in a single swallow without a second glance.
“Time to sleep.” He placed the glass aside, drew back the covers, and lay down, pulling me into his arms.
I looked at the empty glass, my eyes burning, my heart hurting as though a blunt knife were carving through it again and again.
“I’m sorry…” I whispered, pressing my face into his chest, my voice so faint it was almost lost.
“What’s wrong?” He caught the hint that something was off and tried to lift himself to look at me, but the sedative struck at that very moment.

His powerful arms suddenly lost their strength. Those sharp, fathomless eyes of his began to blur, shock flooding them.
“The water…”
He slumped against me, his weight so heavy it stole the air from my lungs.
With the last trace of his strength, he forced out a broken “no,” reaching weakly for my clothes.
“Don’t leave, Lianne.”
I held back my tears and reached up to softly stroke his beautiful face, now slipping deeper into unconsciousness.
“Sleep well, Ethan,” I whispered in agony, as though my heart had been cut apart piece by piece. “When you wake up, everything will return to how it should be. You’ll go on being the Alpha, start a new life, and find someone who suits you better…”
At last, his hand dropped lifelessly onto the sheets, his breathing turning slow and steady.
I bent down and pressed one final kiss to his cold lips.
“Ethan, goodbye.”
From the instant I stepped into his life, my existence had been nothing but a mistake.
And now, I had to bring that mistake to an end with my own hands.
Drawing in a deep breath, I rose from the bed, my fingertips still shaking faintly.
I picked up the phone hidden beneath the pillow, its screen shining brightly in the dim room.
I entered the number etched into my memory, my fingers moving across the screen as I sent a short message.
“Proceed as planned. Thorn Woods’ northern lookout. Come get me.”
I put the phone down, refusing to leave myself any room to grieve.
I had cut my luggage down to almost nothing, with a black backpack carrying a few sets of clothes and a set of forged identity papers.
