Chapter 408:
He stopped mid-step and turned back toward me. The overhead lights cast a pale glow across his face, sharpening every flawless feature until he looked almost unreal.
At that moment, his eyes appeared to contain an entire galaxy of frigid, brilliant stars, radiantly bright, yet bitterly cold.
For a moment, I completely forgot how to breathe.
“Ms. Riley,” he said calmly, though the authority in his tone was impossible to ignore, “allow me to remind you that this is a workplace.”
He looked at me steadily. “As your superior, I invited you into my office to discuss work matters. Refusing outright…” His lips curved faintly, though there was no warmth in them. “Are you challenging Voss Group’s rules, or simply testing my patience?”
Every word landed cleanly and sharply, like a slap across my face. Reality came crashing back instantly.
He was letting me know, to him, I was just a pawn, someone he could control and then abandon without a second thought.

I bit down hard on my teeth before finally forcing myself to follow him into the office.
Nothing inside had changed much from three years ago. The same cold minimalist design. The same spotless order.
Even the documents on his desk were stacked in neat, exact piles, rigid enough to make the entire room feel oppressive.
Then my gaze accidentally caught on a photo frame sitting in the corner of the desk.
The frame had been turned facedown, but a corner of the photograph still peeked out beneath it. Pink and white lace. The hem of a woman’s dress.
My heartbeat stumbled violently. Was that his new mate?
Before I could look closer, Ethan crossed the room in long strides. His fingers pressed down over the frame before he casually flipped it over with a dull sound, hiding the picture completely.
Then he sat down behind the desk and tossed a stack of documents toward me.
“Effective immediately, you will no longer oversee the Brinewick project. Starting today, you’ll be taking charge of the downtown mall development instead.”
“I refuse.” The rejection escaped my mouth before I could stop myself.
The Brinewick project was located far out in the suburbs. I had originally planned to use the project as an excuse to stay onsite and avoid seeing him as much as possible.
But the downtown mall project was different. If I took over that project, I would have to show up in this building every single day, right under Ethan’s eyes.
“The contract clearly states that Brinewick project is my primary assignment.” I forced myself to meet his gaze despite the panic building in my chest. “You can’t just change my responsibilities whenever you feel like it.”
Ethan did not even bother looking up. His long fingers flipped calmly through the contract while he spoke in a detached tone so cold it sounded almost like a final verdict. “Clause Three of the supplemental agreement states that project personnel may be reassigned according to company requirements and project progress.”
