Chapter 665

Chapter 665:
From everything I had experienced, Ethan could be overbearing and fiercely possessive, sometimes to an unreasonable degree. But whenever it came to me, he had always shown remarkable restraint and gentleness.
Even when we argued at our worst, he had never laid a hand on me.
“You’re making him sound much scarier than he really is,” I said, shaking my head helplessly. “He’s not like that.”
Tracy rolled her eyes and laughed. “You’re completely blinded by love.”
When lunchtime came, I had intended to stay in my office and finish those complicated due diligence reports. But after Tracy kept insisting, I finally gave in and joined her for lunch.
As I watched Jeremy pull out her chair and carefully slice her steak into small pieces, a pang of envy spread through the empty place in my heart.
My best friend was being treasured with such care. No matter what the future held, at least she was truly happy in this moment.
I was still lost in those thoughts when my phone vibrated inside my bag.
It was a message from Ethan. “What are you doing?”
My fingers tightened around my fork as I answered truthfully, “Having lunch with Jeremy and Tracy.”

About a minute after I sent the reply, Jeremy’s phone started ringing.
He glanced at the caller ID, and his expression immediately turned serious. Giving us a small nod, he said, “It’s Ethan. Go ahead and eat. I’ll take this outside.”
I watched Jeremy walk toward the terrace before lowering my gaze to the bowl in front of me, absentmindedly stirring my soup.
Why was Ethan calling Jeremy now? Was it about work… or was he asking about me?
Lianne’s POV:
The moment that thought crossed my mind, I quickly forced it away.
I silently scolded myself for letting my imagination run wild. Ethan was still in Nshire, drowning in work every day. There was no way he had spare time to keep tabs on whether I’d eaten lunch.
Even so, I found myself unconsciously listening to every sound coming from outside.
A few minutes later, Jeremy ended his call and walked back. He pulled out his chair, sat down, and said casually, “Ethan told me he’ll finish up his work abroad in three days and come back.”
My hand stopped moving. The spoon slipped slightly in my grasp and struck the rim of the bowl with a clear, crisp clang.
Three days. Ethan would be back in three days.
The fragile peace we had managed to maintain across phone screens and thousands of miles was about to come to an end.
Jeremy noticed my reaction right away. He lifted an eyebrow, then casually suggested, “Why don’t we take Ruby and Silas to the resort for a few days after he gets back? Tracy hasn’t been in a good mood lately. She could really use a trip to relax.”
He paused for a moment, a meaningful look flashing through his eyes. “Besides, that resort was one of the projects you managed back then. No one knows Brinewick better than you.”
