Chapter 837:
The scent was so faint, so barely there, that it could only mean one thing: he hadn’t been close to anyone. At most, they’d simply occupied the same enclosed space for a fleeting moment.
I kept telling myself over and over to trust him. A man willing to lay down his life for me—surely he would never betray me.
“What’s wrong? You look pale.” Noticing the tension in my frame, Ethan glanced over, his eyes softening with real worry.
I shoved the storm of emotions deep down and looked up, molding my face into a smile that seemed perfectly ordinary. “Nothing. Just felt a chill all of a sudden. Go take a hot shower—it’ll warm you up.”

“Alright. Don’t stay up too late.” His voice was tender as he flicked a finger lightly against my forehead, then turned and disappeared into the bathroom.
I watched his silhouette vanish around the corner, the smile slowly draining from my face. My gaze drifted, almost against my will, to his phone lying on the table.
The screen flickered to life for just a moment—a new notification had arrived.
I had always been sensitive, always hungry for reassurance. Years of drifting from place to place had taught me to question everything, to trust nothing.
But this time, I curled my fingers into tight fists, forcing myself to suppress every urge to look.
I repeated the same mantra in my head: believe in Ethan. Believe in the devotion and loyalty he had always shown me.
If I couldn’t even trust him, then there was truly no one left in this world I could trust.
It wasn’t until I returned to the office that I finally felt my feet touch solid ground again.
Work kept me constantly on the move, shuttling between meetings and site inspections from morning until evening. By the time each day ended, I was physically drained, leaving little room for my mind to wander.
When I got home at night, I’d collapse into bed and drift off almost immediately, no longer lying awake as I had before.
One afternoon, during a short break between meetings, I absentmindedly scrolled through my phone when my thumb suddenly stopped.
Melisa had posted a new update.
The photo showed an elegant engagement ring sparkling on her finger. The caption was a single word: “Yes.”
She was getting ready to enter a mate bond.
I stared at the screen for a long moment, unable to process the mixture of surprise and confusion rising inside me.
From everything I knew about her, Melisa wasn’t someone who would give up on Ethan so easily. Yet the ring looked undeniably real, and the comments beneath the post were already overflowing with congratulations.
After hesitating briefly, I tapped the like button.
No matter what she’d done in the past, if she had truly decided to let go of her obsession and begin a new chapter, then that was good news for everyone.
