Chapter 538:
“Please stay. If you vanish again like before… I won’t survive it this time. I’ll tear myself apart. I’ll ruin everything around me,” he whispered, his voice rough enough to scrape against my chest.
The desperation swimming in his eyes squeezed painfully at my chest. Words refused to come. My lips parted, yet nothing followed.
There was nothing I could say.
After all, I already knew the ending waiting for us was close.
The silence between us answered in my place. Bit by bit, the fragile hope lighting his expression faded away.
He didn’t demand anything else from me. Instead, he slowly lowered his hand and leaned forward, resting his forehead near my neck, breathing me in as though trying to memorize my existence.
Deep down, he had already understood. Acceptance was simply beyond him.

The private jet drifted through the sky in near silence, disturbed only by the muted drone of the engine.
For the first time in ages, sleep claimed me without fear chasing after it. No nightmares. No bloodshed. No suffocating family conflicts clawing at my mind.
When I finally stirred awake, sunset had painted the clouds outside the window in streaks of amber and rose.
Turning slightly, I found Ethan already watching me.
The formal clothes were gone. He wore only a plain white shirt now, loose around the collar and exposing the elegant line of his neck.
Without the armor of wealth and status, he resembled the young man I’d met years earlier. Calm. Gentle. Untouched.
Then I noticed the reddish imprint on the back of his hand, left there from supporting my face for far too long.
A dull ache spread through my chest. He must have stayed frozen in place the entire time just to avoid waking me.
“You’re up,” he murmured softly, sleep still lingering in his low voice. His hand rose to brush several loose strands of hair away from my cheek.
Heat crept into my face. Embarrassed by the tenderness in his gaze, I straightened quickly and searched for another topic. “We should be landing soon, right? Tracy’s probably already at the airport.”
“Mm.” He pulled his hand back slowly, something unreadable crossing his expression. After a brief pause, he added quietly, “Jeremy came too.”
Surprise flickered through me, though I simply nodded.
We passed through the VIP exit together. The instant we stepped inside the arrivals hall, the sight that greeted us made my nose burn.
Sunlight streamed through the towering glass walls, washing everything in gold. Tracy stood waiting with Ruby in her arms, the little girl’s twin ponytails bouncing as she moved. Beside them was Jeremy, impeccably dressed as always, yet now carefully carrying Silas against his chest with unexpected patience.
The four of them looked like a picture-perfect family.
Beside me, Ethan’s grip on my hand tightened.
A faint tremor ran through his fingers.
This was a man who had never flinched in war, never shown weakness while crushing rivals with effortless smiles. Yet now, he looked terrified.
I gently squeezed his hand in return before leaning close enough for only him to hear. “It’s okay. Ruby hasn’t forgotten you.”
