Chapter 742:
My trembling fingers opened a travel app, and I found myself staring at flights headed toward the border.
In the end, though, I quietly closed the app.
I carried the weight of my father’s life on my shoulders, along with the burden of the truth. Those shackles were mine to bear, and I knew I would never truly be free in this lifetime.

Before I knew it, only three days remained before the trial.
My sleep schedule was completely wrecked. Every night, I managed only two or three hours of rest. The moment I closed my eyes, Rola’s cold, twisted smile would appear, followed by the horrifying image of my father fighting desperately through his final moments.
In just two weeks, I had lost nearly ten pounds. Clothes that once fit me perfectly now hung loosely off my body, making me look painfully thin.
Tracy quickly noticed how much I had changed. Afraid I wouldn’t even make it to the trial in one piece, she insisted on getting me out of my apartment, using the excuse of introducing me to Frank’s girlfriend.
“Lianne, just look at yourself. You look ghostly pale!” Tracy scolded me the entire drive, unable to hide her concern. “Have you been skipping meals again? If you keep treating yourself like this, your body won’t be able to take it.”
I looked into the mirror on the sun visor and carefully applied a thick layer of lipstick over my pale lips, hoping to brighten my face. “I have been eating,” I replied softly. “I just haven’t had much of an appetite lately.”
“Why don’t you stay with me for a while?” Tracy suggested, holding my hand, her eyes filled with worry. “I’ll have the chef prepare healthy meals for you every day.”
I smiled and politely refused. The last thing I wanted was to disrupt the peaceful life she had finally built with Jeremy.
As the two of them bickered playfully over small things during the ride, their liveliness only made the storm inside my heart feel heavier.
Not long after, we reached the restaurant where we’d agreed to meet. Frank was already waiting outside. Standing beside him was a young woman with a soft smile and an elegant, quiet presence, someone who looked like she’d spent her entire life surrounded by warmth and care.
“Her name is Jane Ramos. She’s the daughter of the Beta in Frank’s pack,” Tracy whispered into my ear. “I still think something about this feels strange. Knowing Frank, this looks like one of those political marriages meant to keep the pack stable. Other than you, he barely gives anyone else a second glance.”
“Don’t overthink it, Tracy,” I said softly, cutting her off. “Frank deserves to live a peaceful life.”
I didn’t want to make an already complicated situation any worse.
Just then, as we walked closer, Frank, who had been talking to Jane with his head lowered, seemed to sense our presence and lifted his gaze. The moment his eyes landed on me, every trace of warmth vanished from his face.
