Chapter 84:
“The suspects are Carlos Simpson and Luther Myers. Do those names mean anything to you?”
I shook my head. “No. I’ve never heard of them.”
“Our initial findings show both men are part of Ivy Brooks’s fan club.” The officer closed his notebook, his expression turning serious. “Based on earlier online discussions, we believe some extreme fans may have been provoked and targeted you. We’ll continue investigating any deeper connections.”
Ivy’s fans…
My gaze drifted to Ethan. He went still, and his hand on my shoulder tightened slightly.
After the officers left, the room fell into an uncomfortable silence.
“Let’s go,” I said softly, lowering my head so I wouldn’t meet his eyes.
He didn’t respond right away. A long moment passed before he finally stood up.
The drive to City Hall felt suffocating. Neither of us spoke.
“I’m sorry,” Ethan said all of a sudden, his voice quiet.

I paused and turned toward him.
He kept his eyes forward, his face set and unreadable.
“The accident happened because of me,” he said slowly. “If I had handled things better, they wouldn’t have come after you.”
I looked at him and felt a strange sense of disbelief rise up.
What did an apology even change at this point?
“This isn’t on you.” I turned my face toward the window and kept my voice steady. “It’s already over. And soon, none of this will matter anymore.”
Silence followed. I thought he wouldn’t say anything, but then his voice came without warning. “After we end this, are you going to find someone else?”
The question hit me hard.
In the wolf world, losing a fated mate didn’t mean you couldn’t bond again. But that kind of loss never faded. It stayed with you, no matter what came after.
I stared ahead at the blurred glass, my chest tightening with mixed emotions.
“Yes,” I said at last, my tone firm. “I’ll find someone who truly cares about me and start over.”
Ethan’s face didn’t change, but something in his eyes turned cold.
“Alright,” he said, his voice low and heavy. “Just don’t regret it.”
We arrived at City Hall.
This was where bonds were formed. It was also where they ended.
We stood in line at the bond dissolution window. Only one couple stood ahead of us, finishing their paperwork.
A strange pressure built inside me as the moment drew closer. It felt like something was about to be torn away completely.
If my wolf were still here, she would be fighting me, trying to stop me from going through with this.
I could sense the same unrest coming from Ethan. Something deep inside both of us resisted what was about to happen, leaving us both pale.
Then, just as it was almost our turn, Ethan suddenly stiffened.
I knew right away he had received a mind link. Maybe it was pack business. Or maybe it was Ivy.
But the next second, all color drained from his face. It looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.
“Ethan?” I reached out and grabbed his sleeve.
