Chapter 40:
Rola stopped short, then something seemed to dawn on her. Her eyes brightened as she turned to me, her whole face alive with excitement. “Ethan, do you think she might be pregnant?”
Pregnant?
My thoughts emptied out on the spot.
I remembered how drowsy Lianne had been these past few days, and the spells of retching she had already had before.
If she was really pregnant…

My heart began hammering hard against my ribs, and panic surged through me so fast it nearly swallowed me whole.
Ethan’s POV:
The idea flickered through my head, then I shoved it aside at once.
Lianne wasn’t trying to break things off with me. If she were pregnant, she would have told me the moment she found out.
Thinking that, I said to Rola, “She’s been dealing with some stomach trouble these past few days. She’s taking medicine and following a bland diet, so greasy food doesn’t sit well with her.”
Rola narrowed her sharp eyes at me, studying my face more than once before asking, still unconvinced, “Really? Did you take her to the hospital to get checked? Don’t brush it off in case it’s something serious. You young people never care for your health the way you should.”
“We did. The doctor said it’s chronic gastritis, and it just needs time to settle down.” I came up with it right then and there.
After hearing that, Rola finally seemed to let the matter go, breathing out a long, heavy sigh.
She gave me a pointed look and spoke more quietly. “You’ve been married for three years, and still nothing. Ethan, I’m not trying to scold you, but as an Alpha, how can you be this useless when it comes to having children? Such a damn waste of strong bloodline.”
For a second, I had nothing to say.
At that moment, Lianne walked out of the bathroom.
Her face was still a little drained of color, and she said softly, “Sorry, I haven’t had much of an appetite lately. Didn’t mean to ruin the atmosphere.”
“Don’t say that, sweetheart.” Rola clasped her hand with concern, then shoved the bowl of soup toward me instead. “Since Lianne can’t have it, Ethan, you finish it.”
I looked at the greasy soup and frowned, but under Rola’s commanding stare, I could only force it down in a few gulps.
After dinner, Harold said he wasn’t feeling well and insisted that we stay here for the night.
Lianne didn’t argue and gave a small nod.
I handled some urgent paperwork in the study, then went back to the master bedroom, where a thin haze of steam had already spread through the room.
The sound of water running came from the bathroom. Lianne was showering.
I tugged my tie loose and threw it onto the couch before dropping onto the soft bed.
A sweet scent still hung in the air. It was Lianne’s usual body wash, blended with that unmistakable scent that belonged only to her as my fated mate, a clean, soft sweetness that could provoke a powerful reaction in any werewolf.
My mind, exhausted from work, snapped awake all over again.
