Chapter 46:
His expression was unreadable as he quietly reminded me, “The Alpha is waiting for you in the office.”
I made my way to Ethan’s office.
When I stepped inside, Ethan was lost behind a mound of documents, an icy distance clinging to him that kept everyone away.
“Back from the Voss estate?” he asked, lifting his head, his sharp eyes sweeping across my face.
I nodded with quiet composure, standing before his desk.
He set his pen aside and leaned back in his leather swivel chair, his face turning unusually grave. “Did you tell my grandfather that I went to see Ivy?”
There was no real question in his voice, only suspicion and distrust.
My heart dropped, and a deep ache struck straight through me.
So that was what I was to him, the sort of person who would go behind his back and tattle.

“I didn’t.” I held his gaze, my voice calm but unyielding.
“Didn’t?” he repeated with a sneer, plainly unconvinced. “If it wasn’t you, then how did he suddenly get furious and even threaten to cut off Ivy’s resources?”
“I said it wasn’t me.” I drew in a deep breath, forcing down the grievance churning in my chest. “If Harold wants something known, nothing escapes his notice. Ethan, you underestimate him.”
Ethan fell silent for a moment, as though weighing whether my words were true.
After a moment, he veered away from the matter with visible stiffness. “Wait for me when work is over. I’ll bring you to the styling suite. Don’t make mistakes during the gala.”
I was about to walk out, but his voice stopped me without warning. “Hold on.”
I glanced back and found him adjusting the collar of his shirt.
In that small movement, I caught sight of the crimson traces along his collarbone, the marks my nails had carved there earlier in a fleeting storm of passion.
“Next time, don’t mark me like that,” he said, his voice low and grave. “Ivy won’t like it.”
I stilled for a beat, then let out a quiet, mocking laugh at myself.
“Don’t worry.” I fixed my eyes on him and delivered each word with deliberate clarity. “Even if you were to beg me one day, I would never give you that opportunity again.”
With that, I ignored the shadow that fell over his face and walked out of the office.
At six that evening, in the underground parking garage, Ethan arrived exactly on time. The driver took us to an exclusive private styling studio hidden well from prying eyes.
Once the stylist had dressed me in that daring black velvet gown, the woman staring back at me from the mirror felt like a stranger.
The plunging V bared a wide sweep of my smooth back, and the high slit in the skirt exposed the elegant line of my legs each time I moved.
When I stepped outside, Ethan, who had been seated on the couch, looked clearly stunned.
