Chapter 47:
His eyes remained on me for a long while, and there was something purely Alpha in that open, predatory stare that made my skin tighten with discomfort.
“Shoes,” he said all at once, his eyes dropping to my slim high heels. “Your ankle isn’t fully healed yet. Change into flats.”
“There’s no need. I can…”
I started to object, but he was already on his feet and crossing the room toward me.
This Alpha, so often distant and untouchable, actually lowered himself into a crouch, one broad hand steadying my ankle.
With unexpected care, he loosened the straps of my heels and slipped soft flats onto my feet instead.

In that fleeting moment, the gentleness in his lowered gaze was enough to conjure the fragile illusion that we were still fated mates, still meant to hold each other up through every storm.
But the illusion broke apart the instant we entered the banquet hall.
With my arm linked through Ethan’s, I walked the red carpet beneath the weight of countless staring eyes.
“Ethan, it’s been a long time.” A well-known businessman approached with his companion, his eyes passing over me. “And who would this be? I don’t believe I’ve seen her before.”
I lifted my chin and waited for the introduction that should have been mine.
Ethan took up a glass of champagne and replied in an indifferent voice, “She’s my employee. I brought her here to see the world a little.”
Employee.
The word cracked across my face like a sharp and echoing slap.
My fingers clenched around his arm, my nails nearly biting through the fabric of his suit.
Three years of loyalty to our bond were wiped clean in that single instant.
I summoned a polished smile and greeted everyone around us. The hurt inside me had already gone cold and numb.
“I’m going to greet a few old friends. Go sit in the lounge for a bit,” Ethan murmured into my ear. “I’ll come get you when the auction begins.”
I gave a small nod and took a seat in the corner, watching the socialites and aristocrats cluster together while they sent measured and contemptuous glances in my direction.
“So you’re that employee?”
A sharp woman’s voice sliced through my thoughts.
I raised my eyes and saw a woman in a blazing red dress seated across from me.
She was strikingly beautiful, yet there was something openly combative and severe about her.
“Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Sylvia Bennett.” She swirled the wine in her glass, her eyes roaming over me without the slightest restraint, her voice blunt and edged like a blade. “I’m curious—what exactly did you do to get close to the Alpha? You’re nothing now that your wolf is gone. Do you really think you deserve to stand at his side?”
Lianne’s POV:
Bright lights illuminated the charity gala while the atmosphere carried the heavy scent of costly perfume and the quiet tension of elite werewolves.
