Chapter 52:
“Ethan! Something’s wrong! Our mate is in danger!”
It was Arthur, the wolf living inside me.
I had never felt him break apart like that before. The torment hit me all at once, like somebody had reached into me and torn my soul clean in half.
Almost on instinct, I ripped my arm from Ivy’s grip, so hard she nearly lost her footing.
“Ethan? Where are you going?” Ivy shouted after me, hurt and anger shaking through her voice.
I did not hear her.

Arthur’s desperate screams were the only thing filling my ears. My legs were no longer listening to me as they drove me through the grand doors of the banquet room and straight toward the outdoor pool behind the garden.
The wind of the night sliced across my face like cold steel.
By the time I got to the pool, the water that had been still only moments before was marked by a few widening ripples.
Right then, it felt like my heart quit beating inside my chest.
“Lianne!”
I threw myself into the icy water without stopping to think.
The weight of the water crushed in on my lungs while I searched the black depths like a madman.
At last, I saw her body drifting lower and lower. She looked like a dead flower sinking under the dark, her long hair spread around her in the water.
I locked an arm around her waist and forced us upward with everything I had.
I hauled her onto the edge of the pool. Her face was white as chalk, her lips drained of color, and her body felt frozen through.
“Lianne! Wake up! Look at me!” I struck her cheeks lightly, but she gave me nothing back.
Panic, an emotion I had thought was buried long ago, started eating through my mind like poison.
My fingers shook when I checked whether she was breathing. She was not.
“Damn it! You’re not dying! Do you hear me?”
I bent over her, pinched her nose shut, drew in a breath, and pressed my mouth to her cold, soft lips.
Once. Twice.
I forced breath into her again and again with raw desperation.
Each time my mouth met hers, the mate bond between us shook like it was being torn wide open.
“Save her! Save her!” Arthur howled inside my head.
“Wake up… please…” I whispered before covering her lips with mine once more.
At last, after what felt like forever, Lianne’s body jolted. She coughed hard and spat out a rush of water.
Slowly, her eyes opened. Those dark eyes were blurred with haze as they looked at me, lost and shattered.
“Ethan…” Her voice was barely there.
I dragged her hard against me, holding her like I wanted to pull her into my bones and keep her there.
