Chapter 53:
Her drenched dress clung to every line of her body, tracing curves that looked delicate and dangerously tempting all at once. The feel of her against me lit something fierce and possessive in my chest, born out of terror and the sheer relief of not losing her.
I wanted this woman to be mine for the rest of my life.
Then a rush of footsteps broke the quiet apart.
“Ethan! Go check on Ivy!” Ava gasped, her face drained white. “She’s having a heart attack. She’s in terrible shape and won’t stop calling for you!”
My whole body went still.
Lianne was still trembling in my arms, her hand clutching my shirt, like she was begging me not to leave.

But Ivy was having a heart attack.
Five years earlier, she had ended up with this condition while saving me during that rogue wolves’ attack.
It was a debt I still had not paid back.
“How bad is it?” I ground out.
“It’s critical. The doctor is already with her, but she’s losing it and keeps saying she needs to see you!” Ava said, panic rising in her voice.
I lowered my eyes to Lianne. She still was not fully awake, but her hand still gripped my shirt like she could not bear to release me.
“Lianne, stay here and rest for now. I’ll make sure she’s alright, and then I’ll come straight back.”
I carefully loosened her hand from my shirt and settled her onto a lounge chair nearby.
Then I went with Ava toward the banquet hall.
With every step I took, the mate bond yanked at my soul with brutal force. Arthur tore through my mind, cursing at me and demanding that I turn around and protect my mate.
When I reached the entrance to the banquet hall, I still could not stop myself from looking back.
In the moonlight, a tall man was already moving fast toward the lounge chair.
It was Frank.
Without a pause, he lifted Lianne’s soaked body into his arms, carrying her like a bride. Her head dropped weakly against his shoulder, and the tenderness filling Frank’s eyes hit me with a sharp burst of jealousy and rage.
“Go back! Rip him apart! That’s our mate!” Arthur roared frantically.
Seeing another Alpha go to my mate made the insult and fury of that trespass nearly snap what little control I had left.
But then a pained groan from Ivy drifted out from inside the hall.
I shut my eyes, dragged in a breath, and crushed down the urge to kill. Then I turned my back and walked into the hall.
Ivy was lying weakly against the couch, colorless and clutching her chest, looking so fragile she seemed like she might break.
Still, when I came near and looked at the face I knew so well, I felt none of the sympathy or pity I used to feel for her.
All I could see was Lianne sinking beneath the water, and Frank carrying her away in his arms.
“Ethan… it hurts so much…” Ivy reached toward me, trying to catch my hand.
Looking at her then, I nearly told her outright that this had to end.
