Chapter 54

Chapter 54:
This relationship, held together by obligation and guilt, had worn me down more than ever.
But when I saw her lying there as if she might stop breathing at any second, the harsh words never made it past my mouth.
I reached for her and took her cold fingers in mine, but my heart was already back beside Lianne.
I could not stop wondering if she was truly slipping away from me.

Lianne’s POV:
I hacked out a brutal cough.
My lungs burned as if they’d been set ablaze. My whole body jerked as I spat out freezing mouthfuls of pool water, my awareness clawing its way back from the dark.
My sight swam in a haze of doubled images, leaving everything around me warped and distant.
I dragged in a breath, but my chest remained unbearably heavy, as though packed with lead.
“Lianne! You’re awake? Thank God!”
A face etched with panic hovered above me. It was Frank.
He was drenched through, his hair stuck untidily to his forehead. His hands clutched my shoulders hard, his eyes still blown wide with the horror of almost losing someone.
I sagged weakly against him, but my nose twitched on its own.
Beneath the dense stench of chlorine and the damp, earthy smell clinging to Frank, I caught the faintest cold trace of sandalwood.
It was Ethan’s scent. It carried that unmistakable pressure and fierce dominance unique to a top-tier Alpha.
Had he saved me?
But when I forced my eyes open and looked around, that familiar figure was nowhere to be found. Only a few stunned guests and panicked staff were left behind.
My lips curled into a bitter, mocking smile as a heavy wave of disappointment rolled through me.
It had to be my imagination.
Ever since I lost my wolf five years ago, my senses had dulled to something worse than an ordinary Omega’s.
That so-called mind link from the mate bond had long ago decayed into one-sided delusions on my end.
He should have been with Ivy right now. How could he possibly be anywhere near this icy pool?
“Lianne, I’m taking you to the hospital.” Frank didn’t wait for me to respond; he swept me into a flawless bridal carry. His arms were warm, yet they did nothing to fill the endless emptiness inside my chest.
The car tore through the night, the heater roaring at full blast. Even wrapped in a blanket, I couldn’t stop trembling.
“Where is Ethan?” I finally asked, unable to hold it in any longer, my voice raw and hoarse.
Frank’s hands tightened around the steering wheel. After a short silence, he said, “Ivy wasn’t feeling well earlier. Ethan left with her. He was in a hurry and probably didn’t notice what happened here.”
The words struck me like a hard blow straight to the chest, so sharp that black spots crowded my vision.
“I see.” I whispered the words and buried my face deep in the blanket.
So that was the truth.
While I was struggling to stay alive, he was worried about another woman.
