Chapter 59:
I looked at him, worn out. “You don’t have to make yourself do this. When our mate bond finally comes to an end, Rola will only be more devastated. What’s the point of dragging out this performance?”
Ethan gave a mocking laugh. “If you think it’s so pointless, why didn’t you refuse her in the first place? Lianne, don’t pretend you’re above any of this.”
I had nothing to say to that, and I only shook my head at myself. “I’m going shopping tomorrow morning. Set your own schedule, and I’ll meet you at the opera house tomorrow night.”
The tension at dinner was so thick it felt impossible to breathe.
For the first time, Ethan placed a peeled shrimp onto my plate.
I stared at it, and my mind suddenly went to the dazzling necklace from the auction the night before. Before I could stop myself, I asked, “That necklace from last night… did you bring it home?”
Ethan’s hand stopped, and a brief stiffness crossed his face.
“I gave it to Ivy.” He did not look at me, and his voice dropped low. “She hasn’t been well lately. She needs gemstones with spiritual energy to help steady her condition.”

I put down my utensils with a sharp clatter.
The pressure crushing my chest finally split open. This was the second time. Every piece had been exactly the kind of style I had wanted for so long, yet every single time, he gave it to Ivy without a second thought.
“Not well?” I let out a bitter laugh, my eyes filling with tears. “Ethan, do you even know what I’ve gone through lately?”
He looked at me with a frown, as though I were the one being absurd.
“Ivy’s fans have been slandering me online. They sent me a blood-stained doll laced with silver powder!” I jerked up my sleeve and exposed the ugly, angry welt on my wrist.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed at once. He shoved himself to his feet and stared straight at the injury.
For werewolves, silver could kill.
Even without my wolf, the burn from it tore me out of sleep again and again, my body drenched in cold sweat.
“Why didn’t you say something earlier?” His voice wavered as he reached toward the injury.
I slapped his hand away, tears breaking free. “Yesterday, when I went to the charity gala with you, if you’d paid any attention to me at all, you would’ve seen this. But you didn’t. And even if I had said something, would it really have mattered? To you, Ivy is the one who deserves to be protected, and I’m nothing more than some vicious, manipulative psycho.”
I couldn’t remain there another second. I spun around and hurried upstairs.
I didn’t return to the master bedroom, and went into the guest room instead.
There was no trace of his scent in there, and none of those absurd memories from the nights we had shared. I stretched out on the unfamiliar bed and fixed my eyes on the ceiling, hollowed out and too exhausted to care.
A short while later, the door opened.
Ethan came in holding a black card. “Why are you sleeping in here?”
